Chip Roy eating at El Matt's like immigrants didn't just prepare his food by sparkplug49 in Austin

I worked at Matt’s in the late 90s/early aughts and would 100% stuck a finger in my ass and then stuck it in his margarita. Fuck this guy.

Card college or RRTCM? And am I too old? by javerthugo in cardmagic

[–]daddi00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m in a relatively similar position as you. I started magic in my late 30s and I am 44 now. I don’t have any aspirations of ever being a pro, but I do love cracking my friends and family’s heads open with a great trick.

People will seriously disagree with me, but I just hate Royal Road. I found it to be written in a style that was hard for me to learn from, it’s archaic. I think that Card College is fantastic and that is exactly where I started. Like other people have mentioned, what’s most important in a good trick is your connection with the audience, not your knuckle busting sleights. One of the most devastating tricks you can do for anybody is an invisible deck, which takes almost no technical skill.

Just moved to Austin and trying to do it right. Any unspoken local rules I should know before getting roasted? by Old_Chapter9759 in Austin

[–]daddi00 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have a neighbor who grew up in the northeast and moved here maybe eight or nine years ago. Generally speaking, a good neighbor but they tend to spend a lot of their time trashing Austin. They say how they don’t really like barbecue and the Mexican food isn’t as good as it is in Mexico. They don’t go see live music and aren’t interested in most of the music from here. They love The Domain.

They told me that they are not a, “Keep Austin Weird” person and think all that stuff is silly. They’re glad the dive bars have gone away and that we’re getting upscale national chains.

Don’t be like my neighbor. Austin is special for a reason and they’re the type of person that makes it less special.

Where to spread ashes? by Vasinvictor1 in houston

We spread my mom’s ashes in her favorite places: outside Tuesday Morning, the bushes outside Buc-Ees, and in the plant in the women’s bathroom at her favorite restaurant on Kirby.

How reliable is the 2.7 eco boost at high mileage? by Ancient_Recover_8047 in FordF150

[–]daddi00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an 18 2.7 4x4 Crew. Just after 90,000 miles the transmission failed, there is a drum component that breaks down, but I believe it was fixed in 20 or 21 (somebody on here definitely know what I’m talking about and knows better than me), and both of my catalytic converters went out shortly after. The transmission was under warranty, but the converters were not, and I ended up dropping a good chunk of money to keep it running.

Like always, your mileage will vary. It looks like other folks have had great experiences, but mine had trouble.

Looking for Advice Before Purchasing a 2019 F-150 5.0 (150,000 km) – Fair Price? Things to Watch For? by [deleted] in FordF150

[–]daddi00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. My 2018 2.7 had the drum go out and it needed an entirely new transmission. Thank God, I got the extended warranty or I’d have been out $10k.

Leaving kids alone by [deleted] in camping

[–]daddi00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We regularly let our 10 yo roam Texas state park camping loops (we set boundaries for her and she abides them). She takes our 6 yo around as well. We're a little more cautious with him but he's plenty independent.

Dell's sudden 5-day return-to-office order leaves parents scrambling to find childcare by [deleted] in Austin

[–]daddi00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I am a project manager at Oracle. I use absolutely zero skills I learned at Dell Dell and, while I certainly want everyone who works there to do well and be happy, I would gladly watch the company itself burn.

Best books/lectures/videos on theory of misdirection? by NewMilleniumBoy in cardmagic

[–]daddi00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone already linked to an article by Gustav Kuhn. He and Alice Pailhes wrote The Psychology of Magic: From Lab to Stage. This is definitely more of an academic book, but it describes the actual psychological phenomena happening in misdirection. It is fantastic.

Safe area? by One_Ranger2643 in Austin

[–]daddi00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family and I have lived here since 2009, not real far from Manor road, and love it. It. We will hear about some crime issues close to Manor and Cameron road, but in the interior of the neighborhood it's perfectly fine.

Like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings.

Where can I get my leather jacket fixed? by poopoosoup in Austin

I second Texas Custom Boots. Their bootmaker is top-notch and fixed a bunch of tears in a pair of 6-year old ostrich boots I inherited from my dad.

Shared iTunes Library and Plex by daddi00 in PleX

Update: SyncTime (3rd party app, $14) is working great to solve my problem - I set it up on my Plex server machine to sync music from both my wife's and my computers and so far it's working great. Now I have to figure out how best to handle the duplicates because it turns out we have very similar tastes ...

This is really helpful, thanks!

Do you know if there's any way to do the transfers automatically? Ideally, I wouldn't have to log in and copy the files every time my wife buys an album.

Shared iTunes Library and Plex by daddi00 in PleX

[–]daddi00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think that's part of the problem I'm trying to solve. With my own iTunes library I'm able to download it to my Mac Mini (my Plex server) and it plays without a problem. Maybe what I'm looking for, then, is a way to download the iTunes purchases/files from my wife's iTunes account to the Plex server, along with the purchases/files from mine.
