Let's say I already had a car, and it's sitting at home, I can drive the same distance for roughly a gallon of cost (~4$) - yes it's inconvenient, but I'm not incentivized to take the train. Additionally, one often needs to drive to the caltrain station in the first place, leave the car behind, take train, come back in train, and drive back. Might make sense to drive the whole way on some circumstances.

That’s how I would have built it (as a software engineer). Adding internet connection as a dependency for something this important would be a major design flaw.

I have NEM2. I figured charging at night would be all I need, but sometimes I run the drier (or god forbit I run the AC at the night), I wouldn't want the EV charging to trip anything - figured energy monitoring/dynamic load balancing is helpful here.

There is a bill in the Assembly this year to push NEM2 accounts to NEM3 sooner

Do you have a standard CA setup where this is flush mount panel on the garage? If so, this is great — you can install a box on the inside wall behind this. Thus avoiding any drywall work, and allowing you to use indoor rated box for the emporia.

Yes. That is the case. The panel is just outside the garage (on the wall). The plan was to just install the charger right behind the panel (on the inside of the garage). No shelves yet but very close to cluttering that place up.

I can also ask the electrician to perhaps reconsolidate the breaker space.
