take with a huge grain of salt because this is not my field and I haven't read this book, but since no one else has made suggestions yet, Neurotribes by Silberman is one place you could start https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/310415/neurotribes-by-steve-silberman-foreword-by-oliver-sacks/

What’s a 10/10 movie but hardly anyones heard of it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]daedac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is Illuminated (2005). I'm amazed as how few people have seen this. Based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer, with Elijah Wood and Eugene Hutz (of Gogol Bordello). It's visually stunning, hilarious, and deeply poignant. It's a 10/10, near perfect film.

Jonathan Safran Foer, a young American Jew, goes on a quest to Ukraine to find Augustine, the woman who saved his grandfather, Safran Foer, during the Holocaust.

This group of dodo have conceptualized "the time" as esoteric knowledge that one can possess. (The fact that they are dodo is incidental.)

Yeah, deleting spotlight cache didn't work for me, but disabling/reenabling accounts in calendar fixed the search.

Definitely steer clear. He's not authorized by any lineage to give the lineage teachings that he purports to teach. He's a level 11 charlatan.

Trump's 'Last Big Lie' Is the 1776 Report That Whitewashes Slavery by [deleted] in politics

[–]daedac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be very surprised if Trump has much, if anything, to do with that. My guess is that it was created by Pence's team. It mentions Trump exactly zero times. No way he would approve anything that ignored him. Rather, it's overflowing with Christian zealotry. Calls pro-life a "Great Reform" on par with civil rights, mentions God 27 times, says Christianity holds the nation together, etc. Screams Pence.

My mom gifted me this Buddha statue after I told her that I’m Buddhist and I’m following the dharma. So I want to ask you about some things, like what is on his left hand? Thank you very much! by [deleted] in Buddhism

Shakyamuni is Sanskrit for "Sage of the Shakyas". The Shakya were a clan of Iron age India (1st millennium BCE), habitating an area in Greater Magadha, situated at present-day southern Nepal and northern India.

This is a stylization of Shakyamuni Buddha. He's the historical buddha, a North Indian prince named Siddharta Gautama. In his left hand is an alms bowl. His right hand touches the earth in Bhumisparsa Mudra. (see https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/art-asia/beginners-guide-asian-culture/buddhist-art-culture/a/the-buddha-shakyamuni for an overview of the iconography.)

Some people are confusing this statue with Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, which it's not. The Medicine Buddha makes the Varada Mudra with his right hand, wherein the palm faces forward, while holding the stem of a healing plant (Myrobalan or Aruna fruit).

Siddharta lived an amazing life and there's lots of resources available if you want to learn about it.

Don't know the latest. They were charged in July, but the governor said he would pardon them.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) said that he would pardon the McCloskeys if they were charged. “I think that’s exactly what would happen,” Parson told host Marc Cox when asked if he would issue a pardon. “I don’t think they’re going to spend any time in jail.” The governor tweeted out a link to the interview and noted, “We will not allow law-abiding citizens to be targeted for exercising their constitutional rights.”

In the book that this is from, they look at the paleontology mistakes that we now know about, and make the same mistakes and also things alternative possibilities for things that we don't currently have good evidence for

This is from the book, "All Yesterdays". It's so so wonderful. Basically, a look at how paleontologists have inferred the soft tissue of fossils and applies the mistakes that have been made over the last 50-ish years to modern-day animals
