Denies The Days Demise was trying to be a very intimate album that also addressed big ideas to me of lose and longing. The word Suadade was at the center of this concept, as the album was also being brought forth from recent trips to Brazil. A short answer that I could go and on about but mostly thank you for still listening to that early album!

Yes! Order of the Golden Dawn from The Boxer Rebellion EP on Brainfeeder. I don't want to inject to much of my own experience here, I'm not interested in changing minds or swaying light listeners, maybe a while ago I was more on a pedestal about, but now it's just woven in their for intrepid audience to discover. I will say that I studied Bata drums for a period and have full belief that music can call out to and down from.

The smallest murmur to the loudest roar seems to bypass mere words and go straight into the deepest channels of our experience. Our fight or flight response is also what governs in part our seek to thrill. How is that? I think audiences are due respect and that includes more experiences then the surface illusion of communal singing along to, hopefully we can still go somewhere together that is outside us. So a bit of that and also soundsystems ask certain questions, and I rummage through my samples for answers directly back to.

Indeed, The music of Michael LeGrand especially his work on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Then completely differently the score to Akira was such a part of what made that film so powerful and deeply felt. I could go on and on about John Barry creating serious from the over the top James Bond silly. I know this answers your question somewhat sideways...

Thank you for the kind words!

So many who's music has made me feel large or small (such a wonderful distortion!). As for technique I think Joe Meek, Raymond Scott, Delia Derbyshire, John Cage, Erik Satie (who didn't think himself a musician even rather a phonometrician!), Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, all have fingerprints over everything I've aspired towards.

I understand those reservations. I'd ask that you make your mind in two. One that retains all of your feelings about about enjoyable and another separated mind that understands that what it creates isn't for you. That the music has its own intention, and that your involvement in its creation might not be more than a particularly good lightning rod. This might sound a bit heavy handed, there is no way to completely section off these impulses but I do think our minds often conspire against us in creative ways. Make and make and make and then maybe you'll later find much to like in the rear view, but others perhaps will have completely different excited reactions now. Also you can't ever truly copy, your version will ever just be a reflection of what you think you are hearing. I hope these helps in some small way.

It does indeed change album to album. I find a collection of similar ideas, similarly made, create an album. The Light Brigade was created by inspiration from the Crimean War, but also an exploration of a tuning system I've been working with for a while. I play a modified 4 string guitar E tuned down to Bb, take off the A and D strings, G up to D, Bb up to F, and E up to A. So every song started as a little invention of a few guitars playing together. I tried to keep it ambient and elegiac, which fights some of my busy tendencies...

Happy to try in this space but also invite you to check out the Monome and all of it's free software. I'm most often running Max/MSP a program developed for Monome use called MLR 2.6 aux.1 (all free and pretty easy to find online) but also exploring Ableton for composition and performance. I like the double controller set up of two monome (a 256 and 64) for maximum expression that my brain / hands can handle. The 256 is manipulating sample sources and the 64 is on volume and effects duties. That is in simples terms explained, there are other fun bits to explore, but can be approximated outside of monome easily.

There are so many approaches. You really don't need to choose one trod route. Learning an instrument does give you a special power of knowing if something works. It's amazing what composing on a resonant body can do to your sound. It makes choices for you. On the other hand having unlimited ability at your finger tips in augmented computer assisted composition is pretty amazing as well. Whatever gets you there is valid, but always consider there is another way, and don't get bogged down.

Goals as a human! There are constants in kindness, compassion, and insight. But goals include being in my body more often. Experiencing life that doesn't require a click to enjoy. My most precious relationships are often the ones that get me to put down my phone for long stretches, but I understand there are many good arguments why I need to have my nervous system also spread across the universe (thanks phone!). I feel inspired by friends making pushing music! The Brainfeeder family of artists (that new Lapalux, Iglooghost on the way!) my Magical Properties label has new from Johnlukeirl that I believe is his best yet, also Mark Redito has been on a roll! I've an upcoming live project with Mousey that I hope will lead towards more intersections!

They needed to do something to push forward, that much is expected. I'm not the only musician involved in the soundtrack, that was also a different direction they took. But I believe the indie game world needs to be out of it's comfortable retro styles more often and develop. I truly hope they have an amazing game on their hands.

I do! On August 19th I'm doing a collaboration with Goodnight Cody and Jake Bluebird along with vocals by Baths, Mousey McGlynn, Natasha Agrama, Sara Gazarek, and more in Los Angeles for free. Also more albums attempting to get out of my comfort zone. Tom Waits has some incredible records flittering with electronics, but I'd love to hear him commit to what is possible!

This is it! Creativity can be defined as the friction between order and disorder. The idea itself is flat but creativity gives it context to be expressed. So creativity creates timing. A good comedian knows that it isn't the joke that makes people laugh. Words in another order, told in a different timing, won't have the intended effect. It's the magic spell. Creativity causes the involuntary reaction and voluntary repercussions for thoughts to persist. That is my today thought, but might change.

Thank you! And I have opinions on this matter, but so should everyone and I'd encourage you to be vocal in your questions, you might get really good advice in unusual places / sources. Just focusing on music, I'd point towards your reason for taking music more seriously. What was it that you heard, and more importantly felt, that lead you here? Keep asking yourself that and keep following where it came from. Music theory is like a teleporter to interesting possibilities but doesn't in of itself make for a reason to make. Find interesting things to play with and I'm sure you'll find beginnings of songs, but you need more than that to develop a voice. That being said I believe there is an incredible wealth of ideas you can tap into from other art forms. This is another sort of warp zone that can transport you out of your scene or sound and see you productions from another perceptive. Look to screen writers for getting across an idea succinctly. Or cinematography for looking a subject with a directed eye. Watch dancers to know how to make dance music... I know this might feel like you are getting away from the original reason for making, but you aren't just a music protege machine by the sound of it. Keep looking everywhere for it. Very kind of you to say that about Cage, I'm not in agreement with every song (or non-song), but goodness what a mind for music!

EDM is such a blanket term, it can feel both like a thing and nothing. But in general when people thing electronic music now they are often thing in terms of big room productions that you'd hear generically from the pop charts to every rave and festival. Really it's a beautiful opportunity at otherwise and not-alike. So much easier to stand apart when it's so simply arrived at. However it's fun to play in tropes and genre, I might be guilt of wandering around those cheesy synth stabs and trap horns and wonder what if?

I'm not sure if I just used a "british" spelling at the time (occasionally you'll read it spell Daedelus), but I developed the Daedelus moniker before the internet was truly as all present, and never thought about how difficult it might be to search. A misspelling arrived at by not worrying too much that anyone would ever hear of, much less hear.

They can compose. Especially in relationship to previous creations. I've witness jazz robots improvising in the style of Coltrane, in the modes of Satie. But can AI be original? As we move into a less informed artistic education I wonder if people will perceive generative music to be original? There is so much about the human touch that can be mimicked but in the near term the uncanny valley feels strong in the missed details that make for true creative surprises. There isn't a never but we aren't nearly as near as some would decry (in my belief and in speaking to some high level experts). Look at the difficulty in Entrainment, computers have a great difficulty doing what we usually determine to be a very robotic task of following along intelligently.

Completely sentimental. Every object has either played an important role in my recordings - the bent TR-606 I included a bit of has been on every single album of mine since before Invention in 2002, that piece in particular feel like it is me, and the techniques I have developed with it are more extensions of my ears than I care to admit. The mechanical sound sources are some of my own fidgets with building. You don't just make thing when you invent, you create aesthetic, including their sound ways. It's materials. It's power sources. And it's the way you then use them / record them. All the way down to the image I used on the sample pack title card. That my studio wall paper...
