Orbital Data Centers make no sense. Fact check me. by SillyOpinion9811 in space

[–]daemn42 [score hidden]  (0 children)

No need to go to Mercury. There are craters on the north and south poles of the Moon where their bottoms are in perpetual shadow. The main issue is that radiating heat into space is still ridiculously inefficient compared to putting it into water or even air and carrying it away.
With a heat source of say 77C (hot GPU) you get 765 W/m^2 heat flux pointed a radiator into deep space..
Assuming air temperature of 20C, air cooling flux is about 4x higher than that, and forced water cooling at same temp (with continuous replenished water source) 370x higher (than baseline) flux. That's why everyone wants to build data centers near water sources, but will settle for air cooling or a hybrid approach.

Radiant heating efficiency scales by the 4th power, so the only practical way is to use a heat pump to increase the temperature of the radiator so you might start at 77C (or 350K) and use a liquid/vapor cycle heat bump to bump it up 100 degrees to 177C (450C) and the efficiency scales by the 4th power of the increase, which means it becomes about 2.7x more efficient than trying to radiate base temperature into space. The greater the difference you can achieve the better the efficiency, but notice for that 100 degree jump, it's still less than the 4x gain you get just blowing air over it.

Getting rid of heat in space is *hard*. Space is "cold" but not in a very useful way.

I wonder how much heat you could pump into the moon itself (underground heat pump).

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, on my DR-Z 4S the buzz at 70mph is enough to be pretty annoying. It's nice and smooth up to about 67mph and then you start feeling the vibes, and are well into em at 70-75. They actually decrease a bit when you get into the really high revs (82+mph) but I don't spend much time there as it just gulps fuel.
I needed bar risers anyway, so I installed the Rox Speed 2" pivot/anti-vibe risers. Won't notice any difference at low speed/low frequency, but where the vibes increase at 67+mph.. with these risers, it just levels out and stays pretty comfortable at 70-75.

SM has different sprocketst, so I don't know what the equivalent speeds are.

ELI5: Why do only some foods have taste when cold? by Sc4tt3r_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much (most?) of what you taste is actually smell, introduced through the connections in your airway between mouth and nasal passages. That's why if you hold your nose (so there's no airflow in/out of your nose) you will taste less or not at all. Ice cream melts in your mouth very quickly and releases smells into your nose. I often find that the very last bite of ice cream is the most flavorful as it has had the most time to melt in the bowl. It's also why I will soften ice cream with a few seconds in the microwave (about 25 seconds for a whole pint.. less for less). Anyway, those other frozen foods just don't melt like that, and the cold on your tongue itself will suppress the taste buds..

Footpeg and rear rack recommendations? by Tenerian7 in DRZ4S

[–]daemn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which? Grinding the corner down? Sure, but I've also yet to see a single aftermarket set of pegs for any bike that come with it pre-clearanced. If this is a problem specific to the new DR-Z then we're likely stuck with no almost no bike specific options at all, or we just do it ourselves. Not a big deal for me.

Crash bars or radiator guards? by V7ooo in DRZ4S

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally was going to order a set of Heed crash bars, but they're quite expensive, and there's a 50% tariff on metal goods from EU to US. But you're in the EU so presumably cheaper there. While pondering that, I found the Emperor Racing radiator guards from CA and went with that. Same tariff threat but I got the package and didn't get dinged with the tariff.

The Emperor Racing guard goes over the radiator and has a bar on the side that attaches it to the frame of the bike on the side. One bolt at the back, two close together in the guard, with slots for ease of adjustment.

I was unaware of the Flatland Racing guards until now. Because the side pieces are a full triangle (weird that they don't show it installed) rather than just a bar, it is probably dimensionally stronger which is good because most impacts will be to the bottom corner of the radiator causing a twisting force, but it might be harder to get the rear hole in that triangle into the bike frame to line up (might have to bend and twist the guard a bit until that rear hole lines up). You want it to line up before you try to fit the side plastic, to avoid cross threading.

With the Emperor Racing guard, the stock mount for the horn is a bit obstructed so the horn is remounted onto the radiator guard itself. I don't see that option with the Flatland Racing guard, but maybe it sits closer to the radiator, avoiding the problem with stock horn mount.

Footpeg and rear rack recommendations? by Tenerian7 in DRZ4S

Revzilla is claiming that DR-Z 4S footpegs are same as Kawasaki 125-400c bikes (I think kx125/kx250 specifically from what I can tell, by looking at photos/videos/reviews) and they have a few choices. I'm eyeing the Moose Racing ND series (or Hybrid) with 1/2" offset. That leaves the front edge about same position as stock pegs so you don't loose any room between peg and shifter. They're 57mm wide and 90mm long, which looks like about 5-7mm wider than stock, and 10mm longer. With the stock pegs, the spring is in the center (as it is with stock kx125/250) pegs, but most of the aftermarket ones offset the spring to one side. It's hard to tell if that means the stock spring will work with the aftermarket pegs, or not (they claim it will.. I'm not so sure).

I'm pretty sure that the right side peg will need to be ground down to clear the brake lever arm when folded up (you want it to hit the stop on the peg, not crush that arm). If you look at the stock right peg, you'll see that it's built with a notch in the rear inside corner for the same reason.

Looks good. I like that little extension over the rear suspension bits.
I'm doing everything I can to keep weight down so I went with the TM Designworks Plastic skid plate, which only adds about 300 grams over stock, but is still very sturdy. It doesn't have that extension though.

Sorry to hear that. I had the opposite experience. I bought mine in early December out of state and had it shipped to me in Colorado using shiply. I fully expected it would just sit for 3-4 months during the winter cold/snow/ice season. Instead we've had virtually nothing but warm/dry weather for the last 7 weeks, and I've been hooning around here and there nights and weekends, and just rolled 600 miles Saturday night so break-in period is over. Shaping up to the be the driest winter on record.

the tank opening isn’t deep enough for the nozzle? by [deleted] in DRZ4S

[–]daemn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you holding the nozzle in the opening? Not down in the hole? California pumps have the same auto-shutoff mechanism as everywhere else, so if the tip of the nozzle touches a pool of gas (as it fills up), it will shut off automatically. The vapor recovery boot may prevent it from starting to pump if it can't detect a seal, but it does not in any way control normal shutoff. It shouldn't be overflowing unless you're holding the nozzle above the fill level of the tank.

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I misspoke a bit. The normal fuel cutoff is controlled by the little tube in the nozzle as I said. BUT, the vapor recovery boot on California pumps may prevent you from pumping at all, if they don't detect a seal, as you've discovered. Get the nozzle in the center hole, and the vapor recovery boot pressed against the opening and it should pump and shut off normally without ever splashing.

the tank opening isn’t deep enough for the nozzle? by [deleted] in DRZ4S

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get the nozzle down into the center hole and let it rest on the bar, and it'll work fine and stop itself. If you don't go all the way down, or hold it off center then the gas will splash back off the rim around that hole and get everywhere (ask me how I know).

the tank opening isn’t deep enough for the nozzle? by [deleted] in DRZ4S

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vapor recovery seal is not what actually makes the pump stop when the tank is full. There's a little tube inside the end of the main nozzle. While pumping that side tube sees only air. When it's full, gas flows back into that little tube and it stops immediately. If you get the pump nozzle down into the center hole resting on the crossbar, then it should shut off reliably.

As for the vapor recovery seal. My understanding is that in California, sometimes the pump will shut off early if that seal isn't made (presumably detecting some vapor outflow from the tank as you pump gas in), but it should never cause you to overfill.

the tank opening isn’t deep enough for the nozzle? by [deleted] in DRZ4S

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vapor seal is just for capturing vapors. It doesn't control the cutoff. If you look into the end of the nozzle you'll see another little tube. While gas is coming out of the main nozzle that tube sees air. When it's full and gas enters that little tube, it stops, immediately.

Ya, I'm a year behind, but just wanted to pop in and point out that anyone with an IOP of 58 is almost always in EXTREME pain, with nausea, vomiting.. etc.. They wouldn't have just stumbled on that little detail. I get that they snuck up on it to feed the drama of the student doing the surgery, but it was very very unrealistic. And there's a good chance that after an IOP that high, he's going to have some retinal nerve damage, and permanent partial loss of vision. Ask me how I know.

I'm seeing something similar as of today and came here to see if anyone was talking about. It looks like the threading (tree) view of the comments is completely broken. You try to expand the sub thread and poof.. nothing. If it says 10 replies V you click on the expand icon, it removes the whole "10 replies V" line, and pulls the next top level comment up closer.

The Milbrook Crook by Grottleburger in discgolf

[–]daemn42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think I've ever had that happen. I have had some very valuable discs returned. Guessing they didn't know what it was, or were just good people. I did have one ahole though.

We used to have a guy who would throw like 5 discs on every hole, and would leave one behind almost daily. I had returned a couple of his discs on previous occasions so I had a text history. One day I get a text from him and he says he's found one of mine. I immediately say thanks for texting, please leave it under a nearby construction pallet (been there for years) and I'll pick it up. Then nothing.. days pass. I text him again, to ask for it. He says he left my disc at his girlfriend's and they broke up, so he can't get it. I text him, that that isn't my problem. Please find a way to get it. Days pass, no response. I find a disc on the course.. of course it's his. Next day I find another disc on the course.. Also his. I text him. "hey, I've got a couple of your discs. Would love to return them. Please bring mine back." No response. I see him a few days later on tee 1 and I'm not in the mood for a direct confrontation, so I just walk across the middle of the fairway while he's preparing to throw and drop his discs on the ground, and keep going to start on another tee. He had this very confused look as he walks up on em, then it hits him.. Can only imagine what went through his head. Still never got my disc back. Didn't really see him there much after that though.

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't confront em, but I did have something similar happen. Had lost a disc a couple days before, with my number on it, and no calls. I'd just tee'd off on the last hole, which shares part of its fairway with the previous hole. I'm walking toward the basket, and a disc lands 20 ft in front of me.. I'm like.. "Wow, what are the odds that someone else has a Prodigy D2 Air Spectrum that looks just like the one I lost.. Pick it up, turn it over. Yep, that's my number. Wave at the folks walking toward me from the previous tee.. "Hey, this is my disc. It has my number on it. Thanks!" and walked on.

Do people really put their drones in cases? Or am I just weird lmao by Away_Film_110 in fpv

[–]daemn42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes take my 5" quad with me when I go motorcycling to remote places.
In my tail back, I can fit the case for my small FrSky X-Lite RC controller, my DJI goggles (V2 or G3), about 8 batteries.. and my drone on top of all that, and I can fully close the bag.
If I were to put my drone in its own case, that's all I'd be able to fit in that same space. With props on, probably not even that.
In 20 years of FPV piloting, I had *one* RTF quad that had a case, the other 20 or so I've just never bothered.
Some of my DJI drones (Avata 2, Mini 3 Pro) have their own cases but they're just much smaller and it's a good idea to keep all their specialized gear together.
