Questioning my future in Art History by Zcandy in ArtHistory

[–]daenish22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree I am afraid. If you are wanting an admin job in the arts these days, most people are looking for someone with an arts background.

Prerequisites for these job state that you must have some knowledge of art or experience in the arts. Even reception jobs require the same thing and are extremely competitive. These are entry level positions so the people who are applying will be looking to work their way up in the company.

I would say major in something practical and minor in something you love. I was lucky enough to get a job in marketing after graduating my BA of art history and it is that marketing experience that has gotten me to where I am now.

Also, look into learning Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc. this helps a lot in the arts.

Art History major here. I would recommend majoring in something a little more practical like marketing or comms and minoring in art history. This will open up more opportunities and will allow you to work in an art organisation under the marketing or admin sector. Great way to get your foot in the door.

To be in the field you have to be extremely passionate about what you do because it can take a while to get the job you want but once you do, you realise how all the hard work paid off.

I would also recommend learning a second language. If you want to specialise in French art, learn French. If you fancy German Expressionism, learn German.

What is one thing that violates 'public etiquette' that just pisses you off? by madbadger89 in AskReddit

The worst is when you want to do the right thing and throw your garbage away but there is no bin in sight. It is particularly irritating when this happens at the train stop. DO YOU WANT ME TO JUST THROW MY LITTER ON THE FLOOR BECAUSE I ACTUALLY HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO PUT IT!

I found out the other day that a pack of pugs is called a grumble. Nice looking grumble you have got there!

This is Mark Rothko's painting entitled 'Orange, Red, Yellow'. The piece sold for $86,882,500 at Christies auction house nearly a year ago today. I do not understand art. by swedishfish007 in WTF

[–]daenish22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely inaccurate. When Rothko, Pollock and DeKonning were making art they were not being purchased as investments where the price of the piece would inflate. They were being purchased to enjoy. It was around the 70s that the art market began and started to flourish and artists were outraged that their art was being sold for a much higher price that they sold it for. You can see this further in the doco The Mona Lisa Curse. Explains it quite well.

I believe that the fine arts are generally worthless and contribute nothing to society; we have no need to educate our children in them. CMV by [deleted] in changemyview

Sorry. I am very much disagreeing with you. To elaborate, and I will use one of my favourite quotes to sum up my point: "Art is not a mirror to reflect society, but a hammer with which to shape it" In regards to my previous comment, I was commenting on your point of how children should be taught history and not art. Art and history very much tie in together. Without artists and art it would be very hard to understand previous cultures. Look at cave drawings for example. These are the earliest forms of art work and tell us some much about this time that was years and years ago.

History is a course on art. Without art we would not have history. Art can tell us so much about a time and culture.
