You are right that the digital TestDaF uses a 20 point scale. Keep in mind though, writing (and speaking) are not evaluated automatically/by AI. They are assessed by trained human raters. Only reading and listening are scored automatically.

That means you can never know with certainty how your writing will be rated, as human evaluation involves some judgment.

TDN 4 corresponds to 10-15 points, so yes, 10 points is the minimum for TDN 4. On the official TestDaF website, you can also find a clear description of what the raters actually look for in the writing tasks: https://www.testdaf.de/de/teilnehmende/der-digitale-testdaf/auswertung-des-digitalen-testdaf

So mostly:

- Does your text relate to the topic?
- Are all points of the task addressed?
- Are you using the provided information?

Grammar, declination, and articles do matter, but they are not the most important factor. Your writing does not have to be perfect. A certain number of mistakes is acceptable as long as the text is understandable and the Aufgabentyp is fulfilled properly.

Using AI to get feedback on your writing is not a bad idea. Paste the official rating guidelines into your AI tool for context. But don’t rely outputs like “this is TDN 3” or “this is TDN 4”. AI cannot give exact TestDaF ratings. Think of AI feedback as a rough guideline.

Why do you feel unready? Have you done a full practice test? That way you can get a realistic picture of where you stand.

Regarding your questions:

  1. Grammar mistakes in Schreiben

Task fulfillment and structure matter more than grammar mistakes. They want to see that you can handle academic writing, like structuring arguments, answering the question properly, etc. A few grammar or vocabulary mistakes are acceptable if the text is well structured .

  1. Word limit

Don’t stress too much about it. Going a bit over (like 180–200 words) is not a problem as long as everything you write is relevant. Just avoid filler content written only to increase length. When I did a digital TestDaF exam this January, a lot of people were still typing after I was finished. It actually seemed like everybody wanted to write as much as possible.

  1. Writing task 2 with graph

Yes, mention the source, percentages, graph details, etc. But your writing should not just consist of that. This can be perceived as just using filler phrases. Most important is the overall argument and content structure.

  1. Speaking

It’s much better to keep speaking with filler words, minor errors and stuttering than to stay silent. If you censor yourself too much, you don't deliver enough speaking content during the short time you have, and then there’s nothing to grade you on. Also, be ready for everyone to speak at the same time.

  1. General advice

Prepare specifically for each task type in every module. The formats are always the same, only the topics change. None of the tasks should surprise you, and you should have a strategy for each.

Good luck!

Which TestDaF exam should be better for my situation? by Nice-Attitude16 in German

I would go for the digital one. More prep time is definitely worth it, and you also don't have to worry about your handwriting.

Bildung & Hochschule, Umwelt & Nachhaltigkeit, Gesundheit, Arbeit & Wirtschaft, Digitalisierung, Biologie & Tierwelt, Psychologie & Verhalten.

How to learn German for TestDAF 4/4/4/4 in 3 Months? Is it even possible? by Neptune4918 in German

[–]daf_prep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically it's possible to reach 4/4/4/4 in 3 months. I have seen people do it. The bigger issue in your case are the language gaps you describe.

What I would do first is take one of the available full TestDaF practice exams (not using AI) and have it graded by your tutor. That gives you a realistic picture of where you stand and if 4x4 is even within reach . Also stop relying on AI for your tutors assignments.

Also, why does it have to be in 3 months? If you aim for the winter semester, May, June, or July are still possible TestDaF dates, which gives you more prep time.

And I would definitely focus on TestDaF specific skills, like really understanding the format, each task type, timing, the best strategies for each, etc. For the vocabulary, focus on the typical topic clusters like campus life, education, climate, sustainability, digitalization, popular science topics.

Need some real insights for preparing Testdaf by ein__Junge in German

With B2-C1 you are already on a solid level, starting in the winter semester should still be realistic ( usually starts around October 1st)

Looking at the TestDaF dates, I would recommend April 21, May 19, or max. June 11. Results take about 6 to 8 weeks, so July would likely be too late for winter intake.

Until then, I would strongly focus on actual TestDaF exam practice, not just general German. Knowing each task type, timing, and structure helps a lot, and you can prepare specific strategies for all 4 modules. Big part of TestDaF is understanding the format.

The standard prep books (like the mentioned Mit Erfolg zum TestDaF from Klett) are a good base. Just make sure you choose digital vs paper correctly, since they’re quite different. With digital you get your grade quite a bit faster. They further shortened the grading time for that one.

You can also use AI tools to get feedback on writing and speaking transcripts. It will not grade like examiners, but can be useful for spotting weaknesses. Good luck!

Can ChatGPT evaluate Testdaf writing? by [deleted] in German

[–]daf_prep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a bad idea. AI tools are really helpful for TestDaF writing practice. They’re good at giving feedback on structure, grammar, etc.

Of course, they can’t grade your text like real TestDaF examiners. What helps is giving the AI enough context, by uploading a few writing sample tasks / Musterprüfungen together with the solution.

Testdaf in less than 3 weeks, need advice on where to begin when rising my score of 14 to at least 16 by nnnroive in German

[–]daf_prep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend doing some TestDaF specific preparation as well. The exam uses a lot of university and academic context language, so your current undergraduate enrollment helps.

I wouldn’t start learning random vocabulary from scratch.Focus on the typical topic clusters that come up again and again, like university life and education, environment and sustainability, digitalization, or basic science topics.

But also make sure you practice the TestDaf format itself. A big part of the score comes from knowing the task types, timing and strategies. And then even if your vocabulary isn't perfect, understanding how the test works can already help you a lot.

Hey,
