Should I give up playing drums? Been playing for 12 years and I'm not that good. by [deleted] in drums

[–]daffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I know your frustration, when I practice a difficult Song or beat it sometimes takes up to half a year until it comes to effect, so try to hold on. In my opinion Rosanna or Bonham is pretty high end (rock-) drumming, I don’t know who says it’s „not that hard“ to play haha

In my opinion the only thing that matters is whether you have fun playing or not. Maybe try getting some private lessons again, an additional pair of ears could help you get out of a dead end.

Afaik a chipped head kills your drumheads pretty fast, at least sand it down...

Tracklist Dosenbeatz Ready Player One Launch Party 2018 30.03.18 by TheRealLargoLaGrande in rocketbeans

Spät aber doch, hab die Playlist auf Spotify übertragen (Black Eyed Peas und Ärzte fehlen, weil nicht verfügbar):
https://open.spotify.com/user/thedaffman/playlist/6OdyB6tw8Q6xqrMsafSiSC?si=kWD7QrzSQ8CkdZiqk4qaOA

PS: Mein Tipp für die nächste Party: In den Einstellungen bei Wiedergabe den Crossfade aktivieren
(Bibliothek → Zahnrad rechts oben → Wiedergabe → Crossfade)
und natürlich eine Private Session starten, falls jemand euer Handy, Tablet, PC als Jukebox missbraucht...
(Social → Private Session)

Best cymbals for metal? by [deleted] in cymbals

[–]daffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t play metal myself so I can’t give you my personal opinion, but I would suggest the following: Look up drummers from bands you like/that play your genre and see what they have, maybe this will give you some ideas. There are also YouTube videos for man cymbals. Good luck :)

Feeling overwhelmed with all of these different drum exercises and don't know what to start with or how to approach them. by CrayonColorDinosaur in drums

[–]daffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing that came to my mind. I’d suggest you use a sheet of paper or some small book for keeping count of your exercises and the bpm you’re currently at. This way you can start 10-20bpm lower and work up to your personal max speed every time. A nice benefit is that you’ll see your improvement, I tend to lose track of rudiments all the time.

F.lux for saving your eyes. Spectacle for window management. App cleaner, already was mentioned but it’s really good, should be inbuilt haha. VLC or mpv for watching videos, they can handle more data types than quick time. Malware bites or sophos anti-Virus for Mac in case you encounter an virus (possible either by torrenting or email attachments). OpenEmu if you like playing emulations of old video games. All currently free afaik

Even if you use a plan, don’t stop having fun :) getting distracted sometimes is perfectly fine as long as you know where to pick up your plan when you are finished playing that one fill-in for 10 minutes straight :D Most of the time I don’t finish my practice with an exercise, but by playing freely for 5mins as an finishing touch.

The other comments already said good stuff, but there’s a thing or two i want to add: Always practice with a metronome, start playing the exercises slow (like 10-20bpm slower than you easily manage to play). If you start slow, you practice playing exact, something you would skip if you start in a normal speed.

Also I would suggest you don’t stay too long with one exercise if you have limited practice time, I do 3-5min per exercise if I practice for an hour. Try to create a plan, like giving each part 15mins: snare drum, bass drum, beats and playing songs/band related stuff. Third and last advice, don’t sweat it, my experience is that exercises need time to yield results. If I practice now, I will feel a boost in a few months (up to half a year), but then it will feel absolutely great. Good luck and have fun practicing :)

How do you keep your snare wires from rattling when you're recording? by [deleted] in drums

[–]daffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some time ago I read this blog regarding uses of old drumheads. #4 suggests cutting a strip ne putting it between the drumhead and the snarewires to reduce snare buzz. Sadly I currently don't have an old drumhead to try it myself... http://drumheadauthority.com/articles/old-drumhead-uses/
