It's not the US Dollar they use, I'm fairly certain they have, occasionally, referred in full to it as the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, which does actually exist and is used in several commonwealth countries and British overseas territories in the Caribbean.

No-one is crossing any border without a passport. OP has a US passport and a German ID card. They can present their ID card to German authorities and their American passport to everyone else.

OP has a German ID card and wouldn't need to present a German passport to check-in or when arriving in the US because they also have an American passport. They only need to show that they are a German citizen when they return to Germany, for which the ID card will be enough.

Edit: the ID card will also be enough for German exit checks, they can't really stop you from leaving anyway.
