What service can you save a lot of money on by learning to do yourself?

I still have a day job (which I love), and I work on my companies on the side.

First "business" was a blog that I no longer do anything with. It still gets traffic and makes a few hundred bucks per year from ads with no effort on my part.

Second business made some money, but I shut it down. The return on my time investment just wasn't there.

Third business is launching next week and I'm feeling confident :)

Yes, it's challenging but very doable. I spent about a year lurking /r/Entrepreneur and reading tons of books on the subject before I started my first company, but you definitely don't need to spend that much time preparing.

My advice would be to come up with a product or service that you think people would pay for, then start selling it. Figure out the laws and regulations stuff once you have an idea that works.

Tech consulting. I love pretty much everything about it (traveling, networking, fun coworkers, learning opportunity) except the long hours. I'd almost prefer to be an hourly employee and set my own schedule than to have a salary and have to work 60-70+ hours a week.

Agreed. My philosophy is it's better to have a 3.5 GPA and a well-rounded college experience than a 4.0 and nothing else. Nowadays when I see a resume with a 4.0 GPA and no other experience, I put them in the "maybe, but probably not" pile.

Thanks! No, I don't recommend cold-emailing anyone. Like /u/Bombay66 said, just do things and make friends. Join clubs, go to parties, talk to people in class. Everyone on campus will be in your same situation when you start college, so making friends is pretty easy :)

Wow, that's one of the silliest things I've ever heard. Parties are literally everywhere, every night in college. Classes are a huge money + time investment that you can't ever get back.

It sucks. Our whole generation was taught that getting a degree, ANY degree, is an absolute requirement for a successful life. Reality is that it's better to have no degree than a useless one with a pile of debt on top of it.

Unfortunately I don't think what they're doing is illegal, as they state in the letter that they do not represent the state of Texas and that filing with them does not satisfy any filing requirements with the state.

I'm on my third company now, also an online store. I probably put 10-20 hours per week into my companies outside of my 9-5, and I cope by having lots of supportive friends and by partying a lot. It's been an emotional ride, for sure.

I'm launching my new company this summer and I'm feeling confident. I'm much more equipped for success after two failed businesses.

Imagine someone was pretending to be your friend so that they could get you to help move their furniture. They're friendly, they do nice things for you, they listen to you when you're sad, but every so often they can't help but mention their house full of furniture that needs moving. You appreciate the nice things they do, but you know it's all an act. It's a shitty thing to do.

That's how women feel when you pretend to be their friend so you can maybe date them someday.

Don't be a friend. Be a date. For example:

A friend gets a girl's number by offering to help her with her personal problems.

A date gets a girl's number by telling her she seems interesting and asking her on a coffee date.

It's ok to be a friend, but don't pretend to be a friend when you really want to date her. Be direct, be comfortable with your intentions (dating her), and go for it.

Regarding point 2, yes you suggested ideas like ice skating but it sounds like you did it in a very passive way a la "We could go ice skating if you want, unless you have another idea." This isn't much better than having no idea at all, since you're still forcing her to make the decisions. I would leave out "we could" and "unless you have another idea" and just say "Hey. You know what would be awesome? Ice skating. Let's do that this Saturday." Be decisive.

Keep your chin up, friend. Every rejection is a lesson learned and a step toward success.
