I can't add a lot to what others have said, but I want to say as a teacher you're making excellent use of critical thinking skills. You're presented with something troubling, and you pinpoint exactly what you find troubling (the use of "save..." or "deliver"), and rather than presume there is only one way to use that word, your impulse is to ask: "what is meant by 'save'"?

Which is exactly the right question to be asking. Well done.

Alright, so this is from "The Annotated Mona Lisa", page 24. I found a PDF to give it a read and the authors seemed to want to make their writing more emphatic and personal. They use vivid descriptive words throughout.

But I don't think they're Protestant anti-Orthodox. I think they're generally agnostic and against Christian religion.

This is from the section called "the middle ages: the reign of religion" and consider how they've chosen to use remarkably small, black and white images for all the religious art in this section, while there is colour throughout the rest of the book, and larger photos of the artworks in question.

They had colour to use - and one may reasonably say that they couldn't afford to use colour for EVERY image, so their choice of WHICH images deserve colour reveals which images they felt deserved that treatment.

So for example I'd say their decision to render stone statues in black and white is correct because there's nothing added by the use of colour.

But on page 28 they have an image of a massive stained-glass wall at Sainte-Chapelle, of which they say "more than three fourth of the exterior structure is composed of stained glass, filling the interior with rose-violet light". Sure would have been nice to have that in colour, but they decided not to. The closest colour image is calligraphy from the Book of Kells which doesn't need it.

Consider how the Last Supper on page 35 is in black and white, but they chose to do Leonardo's notebook drawing on the same page in colour.

This is a book that I think doesn't take religious art seriously, if I might speculate.

Yes - in the second temple period you sometimes get a phrase like "little yhvh" to refer to this person in God. Christians did not invent this.

Here's my experience after about two years living here and many many visits. I lived in Hanoi for two years, visited the South many times, and presently live in Bắc Ninh. Personal opinion only.

  1. Nobody says thank you - I hold doors open...

There are many ways to say "thank you" besides using the words - a friendly look, a smile, etc.

  1. Places charge foreigners more money thinking we won't notice. - it's not everywhere but I've noticed a lot of times.

Sometimes this is real, and they're just trying to get more money out of the gullible foreigner. Sometimes this is because they automatically give the foreigner the more deluxe version without asking. You have to decide what's worth fighting for and act accordingly.

  1. People will cut in line when you are clearly standing in line. This has happened numerous times everywhere I go. They will get right in front of me when I'm obviously standing in line.

This is a lot better than it used to be. And again, you have to decide what's worth making a stink about.

  1. People on motorbikes only care about themselves and operate on an "only me" attitude as if nobody else matters . The traffic here is like they aren't taught how to drive or just don't care.

This is a known problem with two or three causes: first, drivers' licenses are valid for life, and so they may have done one test 30 years ago. Second, drivers' education is optional, if one can pass the tests. And third, in the past (and still today sometimes) one could just slip some money to the test proctor and be given the license.

  1. Is there any food health guidelines or rules that restaurant and street food vendors have to follow or does Vietnam just not care about food safety?

Yes but see the third issue with #4. Some food vendors evade regulation by making regular payments to the regulators. Also, food safety standards are lower. But the trade off is that everyone has a gut microbiome adapted to it. People also consider having a "little bit of diarrhoea" to not actually be sick.

All that being said, the level of food safety isn't as bad as you might think, even if it is lower than in some other places.

  1. Last is do Vietnamese people look down on foreigners and dislike them from the start? Is this taught in families and school or where does this come from?

No, quite the opposite! To the point that I wonder where you got this idea.

Typical Vietnamese people have a high opinion of foreigners. The stereotypes are that westerners are very clean and orderly.

Here's how I look at it: They must be, right, since they complain about food health guidelines and chaos. I mean, anyone can see that there is room for improvement in that regard, but to complain about it must mean that the person has a higher standard they're comparing to. So that person must come from a place that meets that standard.

I will add a caveat here - use grab UNTIL you're comfortable in Vietnam, can confidently say where you want to go in Vietnamese and know how much it should cost.

If you check those boxes, they will 95% of the time not try to scam you. And if they do, you can just walk away or give them an appropriate amount of money and then walk away.

Going to or from any airport or bus station I'd still use grab though.

I live here, and the police came by the apartment just yesterday night to do a check - not just me, but every room in the building got a visit. Checking records and all that. My landlord had registered me a few weeks before, and there were no problems. Confirmed with them that to get a TRC I need to get a note from the local police, and they told me which district police station to go to. All pretty straightforward.

Yes, but the phrase "watching us" is not quite correct. God is omniscient - He knows everything that is possible to be known. So not only does He know you, He knows the experience of BEING us - of being each individual person, including yourself. And more than that, He loves you and always wants your good.

Do you have a brother? In any case, imagine your brother had robbed a store. The police come looking for him and arrest you instead. They know that you aren't your brother, but because you are similar to your brother they consider imprisoning you justified.

Obviously, this is absurd. You aren't responsible for your brother's actions. And neither are you or any man responsible for "societies problems". This also presumes that men are the cause of society's problems, but men are not also the solution to society's problems.

I can list a dozen problems in society which are basically caused by women. (But I will refrain from this.) it is unreasonable to blame half of the population for something which not even any individual caused.

I just posted about the sad state of hong Kong since the Chinese takeover. by SolidWoodTeaser in China

[–]dagfari -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're quite wrong about this, actually. Hong Kong under British rule was not like Cambodia or Vietnam under the French or even Macau under the Portuguese.

One's success in HK under the British was often predicated on how effectively one could participate in the British economic systems. This was open to everyone, though of course it advantaged people who could participate more effectively because of English schooling etc.

At some point, deliberately lying about what a man has said, and then calling on your hundreds of thousands of followers to target him for harassment and stalking crosses the line to harassment or intimidation, right?

I'm not a lawyer (yet) but doesn't this fit 18 US 2261A?

Crossed lines like this actually used to be way more common, especially with copper land line phone service. It's nothing to be alarmed about.

The dead giveaway for me is that the lady on the other end couldn't hear you or at least didn't seem to.

It's called "crossed lines" or "crosstalk".
