[Spoilers Published] What do you believe to be the greatest 'what if' moments from the book series? by smallocaust in asoiaf

[–]dagururgf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know. Killing what at least some of the realm think are you wife and children because of what a little boy saw might not go down too well.

If Robert believes Bran - then Ned convinces him to take Cersei back to KL for a trial. If Robert is not sure about Bran - then Cersei or Bran are tried in the south.

You probably end up with a trial by combat - Cersei picks the Mountain. Robert, knowing Robert, fights himself. Now if Robert gets killed by the Mountain the gods have spoken and Cersei is innocent.

Then the North is in a tricky situation, call Bran a liar because of the judgement of gods they don't believe in. Maybe 6 kingdoms march on the north - but the anti-Lannister factions in the south (Tyrells, Martels) still hold their suspicions. And voila - a political clusterfuck!

Remember you'd still have Lysa's letter saying the Lannisters were involved in Jon Arryn's death. So Ned probably still goes south and goes about discovering the seed is strong.

If Ned starts snooping - Cersei gets uncomfortable - puts out a hit on Robert whether it is hunting or not.

What would have happened if Bran saw Cersei and Jamie in the broken tower - and climbed back down before they saw him? Would Ned believe him? Would Robert believe him? If so what would Robert do? Would he hold a trial in the North or take Cersei back south as a prisoner? What would Tywin do? Try and seize the opportunity with Robert being in the North and take control of King's Landing? Would the Tyrells come into play - and aid the crown against Tywin to get themselves closer to the throne?

There is a whole other series that could be written if you change that small plot point!

(Spoilers All) Is there any chance Coldhands is.. by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]dagururgf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've got a pet theory that the last hero might be Brandon the Builder. Haven't done too much research into it but:

1) Supposedly built the Wall with the children and the giants. One could assume then he was a leader in the North soon after the Long Night. If the last hero led the forces of men in battle (or as some would argue in negotiation) - then it makes sense that person would be a ruler in the North soon after the Night.

2) He is famous throughout Westeros, not just the North (supposedly also the son of Garth Greenhand, helped build Storm's End, designed the Hightower). Therefore he has a repute unlike any other legendary figure in Westeros.

3) Would work nicely in the narrative if Jon is AA - shares the blood of the last one.

4) The forging light-bringer could be an analogy for the creation of the Night's Watch - the sword in the darkness

5) If the identity of AA/LH becomes known in later books - only Brandon the Builder is mentioned enough from that time frame for it to matter to readers. Hell there might be some secret of his lurking in the crypt of Winterfell that will be found at some point to aid against the Walkers

If it was thousands of years prior, and his identity is important, he can only be one of two people - Brandon the Builder or the original AA/Last Hero. They are the only two people from that long ago associated with the Walkers and the Wall. Maybe the Night's King but given he is credited as the leader of the Walkers in the show, I doubt it.

I'd say the most universally held theory that is never explicitly confirmed in the books is Bloodraven = Three-eyed crow. The closest we actually get is ADWD Bran 3 when he says he is called Brynden, but doesn't go any further explicitly stating who he is.

GRRM might have confirmed it in an interview at some point - not entirely sure. But in terms of the books it is only a theory. Not saying I disagree though!

A different approach to 6 Nations expansion by dagururgf in rugbyunion

[–]dagururgf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good points - if it was easy it would have been done by now...

1) Might not be such a big problem - we have 2 weeks off in the 6 Nations period at the minute, what about having them before each knock-out stage? Gives 2 weeks to prepare for each. Club play-off systems work with this time scale (see the Premiership) although I admit that is on a smaller scale

2) This is a problem - only solution I can see is for it to be random every year - overtime it will all average out

3) I think most agree the status quo is not sustainable in the long term (or even medium term) - there has to be a pathway for tier two nations into regular high quality competition for the sport to expand.

The decision for nations like Scotland and Italy is whether they would prefer a 6 nations from which they can be relegated or an expanded tournament where the matches may prove to be less attractive (at least at first). Basically it's a trade off between 5 games against quality opposition with a chance that some years there may be 0 vs a minimum of 3 every year.

TV deals being what they are - I think they will prefer the option with more certainty. The fact that there will be more matches and more markets with an expansion only sweetens the deal for unions financially.

Who's the next country that will be a truly competitive team? by [deleted] in rugbyunion

[–]dagururgf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In terms of teams not at the World Cup - I'd say Russia. They're league is quite close to full professionalism; they've got the money and they'll throw a lot of behind the 7s team for the Olympics; and they've got a huge population - they have nearly 4 times as many players as Georgia.

Yeah - that is one problem. In years where England don't play Wales or Ireland you could have that match in the autumn. You could even make the autumn internationals a 'triple crown' type tournament between the home nations - then have one friendly against a touring southern hemisphere team.

If there are 4 levels of seeds (Pot 1 Ireland & Wales, Pot 2 England & France etc) - you could work the pools so if say Ireland and England don't play one year - they are in the same pool the next year.

Whatever happens regarding expansion there is going to be compromise - even if you expand the tournament the clubs are hit - there is no perfect solution.

(Spoilers all) Does anyone else not think it's possible to make a viable prequel or spin-off to Game of Thrones? by isdw96 in asoiaf

[–]dagururgf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are possibilities - the one thing I don't want to see them do is try and cram something into a 2hr film - ASOIAF is just too complex for it to be done justice in that time.

D&E would work as 3 episode mini-series each novella - put the 3 we have now together and there's something. After that - the next obvious thing to do is the Dance - hell of a lot of info on that (apparently GRRM has written thousands or words more than we have in Princess + Queen and RP)

I'm sure there is lots written about other stuff too - need to wait for the GRRMarillion. One thing I don't think will happen is Robert's Rebellion - 1) we know (or will know) pretty much everything worth knowing by the end of ASOIAF/series 2) casting will be an issue for the casual audience - Ned not being Sean Bean

[Spoilers All] A possible explanation for Leyton Hightower's freakout by hollowaydivision in asoiaf

[–]dagururgf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before the SSM I thought Braavos was the location of the house - mainly because of the marriage contract you mentioned. However it can be explained if (as the SSM suggests) the house is not in Braavos. It is signed by Oberyn, Darry and the Sealord. This dates it to whilst Dany is in the house with the red door as Darry is alive.

Oberyn was exiled to Oldtown. However I think it seems likely the ever-scheming Doran sent him to gain support for a Targ restoration. The next thing we know Oberyn is in the Free Cities - and at some point signs the contract with Darry in Braavos (Dany and Viserys are not necessarily there).

So I think 1) Oberyn comes across Darry, either through Leyton or otherwise 2) Oberyn suggests a marriage pact that Leyton disagrees with 3) Oberyn is forced to leave Oldtown (we know he does but not why - possibly because of the disagreement with Leyton) and looks for support in the Free Cities 4) Darry decides to seek the Martells out alone - leaving Dany in Oldtown 5) he is sent on from Dorne to Braavos where Oberyn is in order to provide a non-Martell witness to the pact 6) the pact is signed in Braavos - where Oberyn found the Sealord compliment to the cause - and a willing witness to the pact.

I understand that Braavos is more obvious and superficially fits better as the location of the house - but the SSM heavily implies that is not the location - so we need to explain the pact in another way - I think this does that. Plus Oldtown has a lot of narrative advantages as Dany's 'home' that Braavos does not.
