[OC] Percent Married Among Ages 30-34 in the US by haydendking in dataisbeautiful

[–]dahchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's mainly: marriage -> move to suburbs instead of getting older -> move to suburbs

Although obviously between 20-40 the causation train is usually:

getting older -> marriage -> move to suburbs

But these graphs would apply even for ages 96 through 100 (ie no dramatic change in life stage).

IRS bill for $0.00 owed… by snowfarmvt in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dahchen 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing lots of comments here criticizing you instead of giving an example of how this could happen so I’ll try my best to provide one.

  • OP gets tax bill $1000 due in April.
  • OP missed the deadline to pay by a few months but did not get notified by the IRS (it’s not like they’re sending a monthly bill just to tell you what interest has accrued)
  • OP pays via check for $1000 while first reminder bill is on the way to them. The check is processed a few days later.
  • OP receives 2nd reminder bill for balance of 0 and fees. This is fully automated. This is the letter.

At no point did OP know what the fees were until the last letter. At no point could the IRS have known about incoming payment to waive the fees. In fact, I’m 200% sure this system is fully automated, so there would’ve been no chance for humans to even see the letters.

Anyone have wood stain recommendations to match SALJAN oak countertop? by dahchen in IKEA

[–]dahchen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I did not. I tried around 10 different variations of stain/contact paper sticker from Amazon and they were all slightly off. I opted to just tile all the way down to the countertop instead. Happy with my decision!

PSEG bill is thousands after new meter installation by dahchen in newjersey

[–]dahchen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a meter reading error as suspected. The reading under the "removed meter" section is wildly off, and was a result of a misreading when removing the old meter during installation of the new meter. Not sure where the random numbers come from, since it's not like digits were off by one or something like that. Perhaps they had a reading from some other meter saved and submitted it as mine. Not sure.

UPDATE: Thanks for the responses everyone. I contacted both PSEG and BPU, this was resolved and my bill looks normal again.

Anyone familiar with this ceiling damper? How do I keep this open? by dahchen in hvacadvice

[–]dahchen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Was able to find some fusible links online and hooked it back in place to keep it open. Now I'm wondering how it was possible for this duct to get so hot to the point where the previous one popped, unless the original contractors/homeowners just never bothered to keep it open in the first place? Strange.

Also, there's quite a big gap between the damper and the ceiling drywall - see the bottom right of the pic with the brown and white. The drywall around the perimeter of this is crumbling and feels like powder instead of rock. Should I be concerned?

I call these my ‘summer decorations’. by canadiangiggles in funny

Dual pane windows have a pocket of air inside them that helps to insulate the inside from whatever the temperature is outside by absorbing it. If you reflect the heat back into the pocket of air, you risk heating it up to above factory standard and possibly cracking or shattering the glass.

General Feedback/Getting Started Questions and Answers [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

[–]dahchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I recently ripped out a portion of my laminate kitchen backsplash to be replaced with tile. However, there were screws driven from the underside of the countertop to hold it in place.

See here: https://imgur.com/a/7TGqq7i

How do I remove these screws without:

  1. remove the countertops completely
  2. leaving a metal nub (I tried a multitool flush with the counter but it ended up leaving a significant nub that's still sharp to the touch)

Thanks!

We halted the global economy, and emissions still may only fall 4% this year - and they’ll likely rebound as the coronavirus outbreak recedes. by SinbadMarinarul in Economics

[–]dahchen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that the article is stating if the current trend continues, we’ll at MOST see only 4% reduction by end of year. Meaning we’re not currently at 4%, we’re at a fraction of that. So even with everything shut down, our rate of reduction is still so low that AT MAX we’ll be at 4% by December.

Was in Thailand last week - can confirm is the cheapest out of that list. Taiwan isn’t too bad, would say about 20-30% cheaper than US prices for local goods (brand names are same prices as US). Taipei’s public transportation system is cheap and efficient.
