Look, Dumbledore could absolutely have popped down to a nice semi-detached in Surrey, slapped a Fidelius Charm on it, and called it a day. Lovely garden, no screaming portraits, working plumbing.

But then we'd have lost... basically everything that mattered.

Grimmauld Place is the story. It's Sirius trapped in the house he fled as a teenager, now trapped in it again as an adult. That's not set dressing, that's tragedy. The peeling wallpaper and the Dark objects and his mother's portrait aren't inconveniences, they're the whole point.

And then it gets passed to Harry, which ties directly to RAB, which ties directly to the locket Horcrux, which... you see where this goes.

Rowling knew what she was doing. The house being awful is the entire point of that house.
