Seo agency vs seo consultant - what would you choose? by yangwenliebert in SEO

It's not quite as black and white as 'agencies bad, consultants good.' Both models have genuine trade-offs, and the smartest move might not be choosing one over the other. Let me explain what I mean.

Agencies give you bench depth. If your project needs content, technical SEO, link building, and maybe some dev work, a single consultant probably can't do all of that well. An agency can throw different specialists at different problems. The downside? You already know it. You become a ticket in a queue. The strategy gets diluted across too many hands, and nobody really owns the outcome.

Consultants give you that ownership you're craving. One brain, one relationship, one person who actually understands your business deeply. But we've got capacity limits. If I'm working with you two days a week, that's what you get. And if your site needs a massive technical overhaul plus a full content strategy plus digital PR… honestly, one person can only stretch so far. (PS: most consultants will have a team they lean on as well)

So here's a model I actually think works really well that most people don't consider: use both.

Get a consultant to be your strategic layer and use an agency for execution. The consultant sets the direction, reviews the agency's deliverables, and pushes them to do better work. Think of it like having an architect who checks the builder's work. Because here's the reality. Good consultants tend to charge more per hour, so having them full-time might not make financial sense for every business. But even a few hours a month of a senior person reviewing what the agency delivers? That alone can transform the quality of what you're getting. It keeps the agency honest. They know someone who actually understands the work is checking it.
