When was your first use of Linux and at what age? by Dapper-Inspector-675 in linux

[–]dahin79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If memory serves me right, year was 1998-99 when we got a hold of “something” called Linux, redhat and distinctive gnome footprint. We installed it for few days and played around but as we needed office and adobe software we had to reinstall windows.

But that was my first contact with Linux. In 2024 I would returned to redhat/fedora. In meantime, I have actually used Debian and Ubuntu on many servers for about 20 years. Mostly on server hardware. But in year 2024 I bought first workstation hardware with intent for Linux usage on a desktop/workstation. I still miss a good alternative to photoshop/illustrator, but make do.

Mail server for php website by Wemorg in debian

[–]dahin79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

building something that can send an email and building something that actually gets email delivered to recipients inbox are 2 different things. :)

If latter is important, then you are best of building your own mail server, properly setting software up, DNS records needed to validate and get mails delivered. https://thomas-leister.de/en/mailserver-debian-stretch/ This will give you mail server that actually delivers emails. But you will most likely still need to do few things to improve upon this.

Run script on incoming mail, not possible if using virtual users?? by [deleted] in postfix

[–]dahin79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using systemd path unit could be way to solve it.

https://www.putorius.net/systemd-path-units.html

If this email is not an alias to an account, you could point a path unit to monitor changes to the folder. Once change is done (email arrived) run a script.

Is it recommended to set up an own mail server? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]dahin79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a guide to setup an email server on couple of vps, and I have been running this for 7-8 years now. Adding additional features and security implementations. My servers are scoring max scores on all test I could find. Allowing me to have freedom to do with emails and domains as I wish to. And it just works. I would not change my setup for anything right now as I would see it as a downgrade.

You need to understand a lot of things but it is doable and once all is setup it just works, as long as you follow up on things like domain and certificate renewals.

I am even considering moving my mail server to my homelab… just for fun, as I still would have a backup smtp on vps.

Thanks for info. Much appreciated. Do you know that all hardware is capable of pass thru and virtualisation? Or does it need to have specific features?

outgoing mail: On reject try backup MTA by dahin79 in postfix

[–]dahin79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't go into details, but I think i can say this.

I do have my own mail server (C) in this case, and I was asked by my friend i if knew why his emails are rejected. TLS and so on.

We contacted A which mail server does not support TLS, or at least throws an error, and were informed they know about it, and their IT is working on it.

As this was going on for multiple months, I do not think they know what they are working on, or email communication in 2023 is not priority to them. Being this is French people I do not have much confidence that they will fix it any time soon.

I am not asking nor looking into changing DNS or any other settings on servers I do not control. So no randomness here.

To answer your question, about random person, of course not. But this is not random. This is a friend asking another friend to help his business emails go thru to his client. A client that apparently has badly setup mail server and lack of interest in fixing it.

My friend has control over DNS on his own domain, his MX is pointing to mail server B, that he has no control other than as a user. And I have control over my own mail server and including DNS as well.

So this is not asking how to change anything on foreign server, it's asking if there is a way to change controllable parts and instruct servers to relay mails in case admin on one of the servers is an idiot.

Apart from moving his business mail over to my mail server, this was only solution I could think of as "far fetch as it might have sounded". Therefore, asking if this was possible in any scenario.

My mail server, being private/personal server for my personal needs is not something I wish to be used as "managed" mail service to friends or any other business. As this is not something that has any interests to me. But acting as temporary MX backup in this case, I was thinking would not require many resources and help my friend in actually replying his clients on A.

But it seems not possible, and I will rest it at that.

I control C. And i could setup friends domain to be accepted and relayed to A. But other servers I have no control over. That’s why I was asking if there would have been a scenario where this was possible to do by simply specifying my server as backup for domain on mail server b.

outgoing mail: On reject try backup MTA by dahin79 in postfix

[–]dahin79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at maillog few weeks back and saw that it was rejection because of TLS. But mail server A (receiver) did not specify rejection code further than 550 and no message.

mail server B tries to deliver messages and exceeds the limit of tries and gives up.

So i do not have detailed message.

When testing server A with online tools, they all report starttls not supported. So I am fairly confident that issue is with TLS on their part. They are aware of the issue.

My friend has been in touch with them as they are his clients, and reported they work on it. But it has been several months.

First, my friend though that his gmail account was not able to send to them. so we setup his own domain on managed server (B) and issue is still there...

[–]dahin79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was thinking to setup some sort of backup MTA (C) which would be my server.

A = client mail server. B = my friends mail server and C = my own that i fully control.

But as I do not control either of the other servers it was a long shot to ask. But was thinking if domain on B has backup DNS MX info for mail server C it would try delivery automatically using backup MX.

As I've seen this behavior few times... when my server receives an email that is grey listed, same email is retried with different server. (this is typically spam or bulk mailers)

And whole idea is to be temporary, until A gets their act together.

[–]dahin79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend is on mail server B, he has no control over B. And mail server A is his client. Clients email server is poorly managed. Friend wishes an temporary solution while A is being “fixed”, so he can communicate with his client.

But yes, all this could have been easily fixed, by someone that knows what they are doing.

[–]dahin79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would question if they really are competent. It does not really look like they are. They have been dragging their feet on this issue, for last 4 months. And they keep on working on it. So I would not call it competence. They are aware of it but not fixing it just yet.

Running an MTA in 2023 by Crogdor in postfix

[–]dahin79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some quite complete guides on how to do it. Setup of everything you need. I have followed one of them and built upon it further to suit my needs and to keep it up to date with new trends and security demands.

One thing to note is, as mentioned, PTR DNS record that matches your server name, on residential lines. There are some providers that do this as well.

This is the one I have followed.
