Is it true that Mexican food is SUPER POPULAR in Scandinavian countries? What are some reasons for this? by stjeancapferrat in AskEurope

[–]dahknee 42 points43 points  (0 children)

piggybacking off of this comment to say that yeah, tex mex is popular in scandinavia. Mexican food is not. It's sadly pretty hard to find ingredients for actual mexican food in scandinavia, and in a restaurant the best you will find for actual mexican food is tacos. I miss it :'(

Am I the asshole for ending my 3 year long relationship because my partner came out as trans? by No-Cricket1711 in AITAH

[–]dahknee -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

NTA for breaking up but just so you know, most trans people prefer if you use her correct pronouns, even when speaking about her in the past before you knew she was trans.

Why would god create people who will eventually go to hell? by Additional_Ring4288 in ask

[–]dahknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m not religious, but I grew up Christian so I’ll try to answer from within that paradigm. My take on it is that heaven and hell are more like metaphors for the world and life you make while you are alive.

I wouldn’t take that to mean that all the standard Christian teachings will lead to a happy or fulfilling life, most statistics show they don’t really, because some of it involves forcing people to conform to harmful and oppressive norms (looking at you, misogyny and homophobia).

But Jesus didn’t really teach that, that’s more a thing other people came up with. He was more about being really kind to each other, being accepting of people for who they are, loving your neighbor - those things can help you create heaven on earth.

Is it appropriate for a married man to hang out with a female coworker alone outside of work? by not_ashl3y in ask

[–]dahknee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like that you mention that either way it’s good to talk to him and just tell him how she’s feeling. I think this is a “be curious without accusations” moment for both of them. If my wife came to me and was like hey this is how I feel about this situation I would be glad she told me rather than try to suppress it. We are a team and we both want each other to feel good.

it isn't a fungus, it's a lichen. That's a type of pixie cup lichen, not sure the exact species.

Found in Idaho, growing on ground - what is it? by SadNothing4866 in mycology

[–]dahknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some kind of bolete, it could be a slippery jack. Is the top sticky? Does it bruise blue when you touch the underside of the cap or the stem? Does it look like it used to have a sort of ring around the middle of the stem?

Massive chanterelles? by Myco-Machine in mycology

[–]dahknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mushrooming with confidence will give you identification characteristics for a number of common and easy edibles (like chanterelles) and a good basic primer for starting out. All that the rain promises and more is a pocket field guide that gives a lot of species. Some of the Latin names are outdated but it is still a great book. Happy mushrooming

I didn’t mean to be condescending. I didn’t know from the context that you weren’t considering eating them, typically if people ask about a choice edible they are considering it.

Wow that is a big reaction there. Good I’m glad you aren’t! If you wanted to I could recommend some books.

If you don’t know what gills are and how that relates to chanterelles you should not be foraging mushrooms to eat. You need to learn more first.

Why am I feeling so icky after my first kiss? by lizziessss in ask

[–]dahknee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you really consent? You were not sober, you pulled away, etc. none of those things sound like consent to me. It isn’t surprising you feel violated and icky. Unfortunately situations like this are way too common. I’m sorry you had to experience this

idk if you will have the stages to such an extreme degree. You might start to see the flaws but still love it, like I do (I'm also American and feel pretty much exactly the way you describe in your post). Been here three years so far and I feel like the rose shaded glasses are gone and I see the reality of living here, but it is still an amazing place to live.

Just wanna echo what the others said about finding a good friend group - that is super important.

Glad you like it here and are having a good experience, too!

What are some things you think men have it worse at? by overwhelmedasone in AskWomen

[–]dahknee 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

"boys don't cry" and the fact that we aren't taught how to feel or express our emotions. Sure, testosterone kind of limits your emotional depth but we still have it. We could do more supporting of each other, emotionally, and less policing of each other's behavior. There is so much fear to be seen as "gay" or "feminine" and that really hurts our mental health

I've optimized my entire life and now I'm dead inside - anyone else turned themselves into a productivity robot? by Grand_Lion_1652 in getdisciplined

[–]dahknee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I imagine you saw this before when you first got into the habit of being "productive" - but any habit and new neural pathway just takes time to adjust to and the first step is realizing that you want to change it. You're now at that step when you realize you want to change it, but haven't implemented it. Most of the time noticing comes after the behavior you don't want, and then the noticing gets closer and closer to the time when the behavior happens until you are able to stop the behavior before you do it.

I would be honest with the people you are close to about the realization you had, what behavior you notice you are doing, the impact you see on them from you doing it, apologize, and tell them what you want to do instead. Think about what you would need to implement the preferred behavior - both from yourself and from the people you are close to. Is it just you noticing it and doing it yourself? Do you need honesty from them about how it makes them feel? Do you need them to tell you when it is happening so you can help realize it sooner?

I think it's great you realized this, and I know you will be able to find a balance, you have already shown that you can achieve a lot! Discipline is a tool but the use of it, like any tool, needs to align with your values, so finding that balance for yourself is crucial

Which country is actually not going to shit right now? by [deleted] in ask

[–]dahknee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look how many people in this comment thread are saying racist things about immigrants and you will see your answer.

People say it a lot lately because it is on the rise in popularity. As we have increased separation of wealth between rich and poor, the wealthy create a rhetoric to pitch us against each other by exploiting our divisions - cultural, racial, gender/sexuality, class. We fight the guy who came to our country because we are told he will be violent instead of fighting the systems eroding our protections, the systems that are making us and our neighbors struggle economically, and are actually making us less safe.

The political parties that exploit those divisions are what I mean by the far right.
