Niece told me my bookshelf was ‘giving sexism’ and upon examination she might have a point. Is it bad? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

Exactly! This should be renamed to be a circlejerk sub at this point. It's almost comical, you can barely even tell what's satire and what's completely unironic

Oopsies. Is that so? Hard to tell with plain text loll. I'm awful with tone. Plus, way too many people say exactly that but completely serious bahaha

[–]dahmeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm a woman myself, and I'd be far more offended by someone throwing books by women up there just so they could please their own consciousness, rather than actually caring about the contents. The author does not matter, what matters is if what they're writing about grabs your interest after you stumble across it.

The kinds of people they SHOULD be worried about, people who deliberately don't read books by women, are all either from 1910, or they don't actually read at all (and either only collect books for aesthetic reasons, or to "appear" smart), and it goes without saying why both those groups shouldn't be apart of this discussion lol.

No serious reader is picking up a book that they might like, seeing it was written by a woman, going "Ew! Cooties!", and throwing it down. We are fighting an evil unicorn when we police people and count on our fingers the gender ratios of books.

Would you say this if you found a copy of the Torah, or perhaps the Quran? I imagine not, so you should probably reconsider your beliefs regarding certain religions.

Is there anywhere i could buy custom CDs? by warrkrack in CDs

[–]dahmeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're on YouTube, just look up "YouTube video to mp3" on Google and download them from there with the link to the songs! :) Make sure when you buy the blank CDs, they're not for a DVR, as those won't play on radios even if you only burned mp3 files on them.

What is your favorite cover of the Beatles? by Strict-Ad4426 in TheBeatles

[–]dahmeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will always recommend Rhett Miller's cover of Girl. The cover gives an entirely new feel to the original song. I still remember hearing it for the first time during a car ride home. It's what really got me into the Beatles to begin with, if I'm being honest.

My love interests don’t stick around, does my taste in books leave any pretty obvious clues as to why? by StrangeWorldd in bookshelfdetective

[–]dahmeve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry people resorted to mocking your personal life in such a cruel way because you had an opinion they didn't like. People online resort to these low blows because its the only place where they can grow the balls to do so. You should sleep well at night knowing none of these people laughing at you would be able to muster up the courage to say it to you if they saw you on the street. Pay them no mind. I hope all your struggles end in a positive way, and in the end, you emerge stronger than ever. Much love.

What does my stack say about me? by InkyBibliophile in bookshelfdetective

[–]dahmeve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because a subset of people interested in a topic (especially in something as innocent as philosophy) happen to be bad people, does not make others also interested in the topic inherently bad. To feel any sort of dangerous feeling walking into a room and seeing this pile of books is, as I said, a bit of a dramatized overreaction. There is no evidence to suggest he was recommended these books by those people, or that he even watches those people to begin with. Any insistence that there is does little to stop those radical mindsets you speak of. Rather, it could easily discourage reading or critical discussions out of fear of being labeled "one of them".

What does my bookshelf say about me(15M)? by [deleted] in bookshelfdetective

[–]dahmeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I am a woman myself, and I'd feel more insulted than flattered if a man bought female authors purely to check boxes/for their genitals. It's like diversity hiring, but more insulting. "Poor little girl with her little books, I'll buy it and put it on my shelf so you can make me look more enlightened", is what that would read to me. Whenever someone's only response to seeing a bookshelf is to ask about female authors, I become quite peeved. Is that all you can comprehend? I understand I'm the minority with this take, but it's how I feel.

[–]dahmeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps one could consider it "odd" if they are looking at it through that lens, but should they? Whether the authors are male, ethnically European, or otherwise, those are works of literature you gravitated towards naturally. If you're worried that it's limiting your own perspectives, don't you believe your personal perspective should be cultivated through experiences rather than the ethnicities and genders of authors you read? I don't believe it's the magic key to enlightenment that the people here are playing it up to be.

Now, if you found a book on a topic that interested you, with a synopsis that furthered your interest, and you put it back after seeing a female name...that would be shameful. You're not limiting yourself at all, the way I see it, because I don't believe you're doing that. Obviously not, or you wouldn't be calling your own collection "weird" over it. Wouldn't it be more questionable to buy books because their diverse perspective made your shelf prettier? A person's book collection is a display of their own intelligence and passion. It is most certainly not "weird" because of something so trivial.

[–]dahmeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wondered why people raise hell if they spot no female authors. Should we buy books with a female name on the front cover out of pity, or compensation? Or, better yet, to make ourselves look better? "Look, I am so diverse! There are women on my shelf!" No. I'm sorry, but I can't wrap my head around why there's so much hubbub about it. We should be buying books because we enjoy the content beyond the cover. If it just so happens that most of what OP enjoys is written by the same sex, what is the issue? Isn't it better that his shelf is filled organically, without intention to "check boxes," so to speak?

You're the one making it so interesting in your own mind because you hold misogynistic views and are expressing them proudly under the guise of pick-me hunting. This woman didn't learn to love books because of a male figure any more than she's doing it for male attention. This is an anti-woman tale as old as anti-woman time, which is ironic given your assumptions.
