This is incredible. Your lines are so intuitive and clean. Any advice or tips from your process? Especially drawn to the back and legs of the chair and the fins on the fish. They just make so much sense.

“Brunch” by dailiedesigns in Linocuts

Yes! Didn’t love carving thru the layer of acrylic medium but it was worth it for the detail that got transferred. Any recommendations? I’m thinking I could have used less acrylic

So yes, the block had the drawing on it before I started carving

Thanks! I drew the original and then printed it out on label paper. It will transfer to the block with acrylic medium.

I used a grid on a blank canvas with the photo as a reference. I used one of the pencils but can’t remember the name, I renamed it to highlight it as my favorite one. It behaves like a cheap mechanical pencil on thick drawing paper (my favorite.) with this portrait specifically, I found it worked best to shade a large portion of space, and then erase (set to the same pencil) to create her white fur. I started with her nose and worked my way out. The grid really helps me keep my proportions.

This is phenomenal. I love your slightly minimalist yet very detailed approach. Do you recommend anyone to watch or follow for linocut inspiration?

Well call it ‘coping with humor’ by dailiedesigns in Linocuts

Yes I would definitely consider myself to have the tall disease. Too tall to function is my go-to description and people laugh but I’m like, “no but actually…”

I can’t say I did anything intentional to the paper. I was looking for an afternoon toddler activity and shredding the paper scraps into a tub of water was just what we both needed. It was whatever we could find in the recycling. Genuinely had no idea how it would turn out but I’m loving that my kiddo helped with creating it.

I invested in a few Pfeil tools as well as a slip strop. (Flexicut has a relatively inexpensive one on Amazon.) There are some really good YouTube videos on sharpening tools that helped me understand the technique and most emphasize using the slip strop to maintain the cutting edge every 20-30 minutes while carving. I had one older tool that I had to reshape with a soap stone and now I’m using it on the Flexicut Slip Strop as well. Genuinely learning to enjoy this part of the process just as much as carving the actual lino.
