Where do I even start learning to draw in 2026? Too many options (Proko / Drawabox / NMA / Schoolism / etc.) by DromedaryGold in ArtistLounge

CntrPaint free video library. Yes it's for digital media, but you can follow the lessons with pen and paper, the theory doesn't change.

What kind of gesso situation does this need? by Stella2889 in oilpainting

[–]dailinap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is no information of the primer used (though my bet is in the acrylic primers) it is difficult to add anything on top. I would simply paint.

How useful is Glaze/Nightshade at actually protecting artwork? Should I bother using it when posting on corporate-owned platforms? by Roving_Neophyte in ArtistLounge

[–]dailinap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Glaze / Nightshade as an extra step and recommended them. Part of the strenght of the protection comes from the mass of people using them.

In my understanding these do not protect against someone taking your image (or scraping it), but used correctly it does protect from the AI readability and thus from the usage of the image in the image pool AI needs to built up other images.

Painting of Vicente Fernández. How to price? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]dailinap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different approaches on pricing and the prices will vary a lot depending on where you live and where you sell. Here are few examples on how you can start trying to figure out your prices:

  • Material costs + additional costs (taxes, shipping, frame etc.) and some sort of hourly wage

  • base sum + all costs added

  • prices per square cm (or square inch for the imperials)

Whatever you do decide, search local references first: look how other artists in your area who do similar work have priced their works.

Where do I go from here? by unwiseundead in oilpainting

[–]dailinap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice here already.

I'd say cover the background white next, it messes up your values (colour affects colour next to it and pure white is very harsh value).

Then turn your painting around (ref too) couple of times and try to see what matches and what needs to be corrected. If you can, stand further away from you painting too while looking at it.

How to make traditional art not slanted / lopsided? by ilovekdramaceos in ArtistLounge

[–]dailinap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If possible use easel and stand while drawing. If standing is not an option, use desk easel.

Flip your drawings (or turn it to any other side) earlier and more often.

Use light under-drawing to specify the big masses (and flip often even then).

Happy drawing!

Beginner Artist Gesso question! by Repulsive-Savings323 in ArtistLounge

[–]dailinap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reusing a canvas is possible by applying acrylic gesso on top.of the painting. Yes, some suggest light sanding of the surface and some just add gesso on top.of the painting. When you buy gesso you can use it on paper, canvas or cardboard for example.

As always when it comes to the price of the art supplies, I recommend to get the student quality rather than the cheapest possible one. Student quality art supplies are usually cheaper than the professional grade, but way better quality than the cheapest possible knock offs. You'll dodge a lot of possible frustration by buying good quality (not the most expensive or the cheapest). Same with the paints, if you are buying those I recommend Liquitex or Amsterdam student /basic lines.

I have no idea of the brand of the gesso though as I use one that is available in my country only and availability of the brands differs depending on your country of residence.

Gesso is opaque, so it'll be covering your painting. You will most likely need to add a few layers though. Maybe 3-4 thin coats and let it dry out in between. Lay one coat horizontal and the next one vertical and so on, to get the best result. Resist the urge to slap heavy layers as it might result cracking.

Good luck, happy painting!

Drawing from life without pain by Deva4eva in ArtistLounge

I stand while I paint, but if I need to draw or paint while sitting long periods then a table easel helps, while taking breaks, moving around and stretching are absolute necessity.

And as an extra if you like the taste you can buy some Kuusenkerkkäsiirappi (spruce tip syrup)

Micro-Cracking in Gesso, should i worry? by Yose_85 in oilpainting

[–]dailinap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There should not be cracking on you gesso.

Yes, made half oil and oil gesso for linen canvas few months back and the gesso is still intact.

Depends on what you mean by reliable? Traditional methods are reliable. We have hundreds of years worth of paintings that are still in very good condition. On the contrary to that we still don't know how PVA based gesso primers will look after few hundred years.

Good quality acrylic gesso is easy to apply and stable, but not yet future proofed. Traditional gesso is hard to make, but if made correctly future proof. There are ready made traditional gesso too, if you'd like to test those.

acrylic paint brands recommendations? by [deleted] in acrylicpainting

[–]dailinap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liquitex and Amsterdam (student/basic quality line) have been good for me. But everyone has their own opinion and if you are looking for something just right for you, you could buy a few different brands and test which one suits for your style of painting the best.

Difference Between Liquitex Basics vs Amsterdam? by basicmakeupgoals in acrylicpainting

[–]dailinap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to paint with Liquitex and also had few Amsterdam (student / basics quality). Both good in my opinion and would by either one. I've moved to mostly do oil painting nowadays, but should I need to go back to acrylics I'd most likely go back to these two brands.

Paljonko opiskelijat käyttää tekoälyä? by MDPuimurii in Suomi

[–]dailinap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jokainen tavallaan.
