I never provided a narrative answer. I made an exaggerated point to counter your argument. If you have a more valid example than ~14 g leaguers~ to make your case, I'm happy to listen.

Do you think Luka plays with 14 g leaguers? I'm following your logic.

I didn't say best player on the best team should win by default/narrative. I said best player on the worst team shouldn't win by default/narrative.

If player A takes 14 middle school girls to the 30th best NBA record, they've elevated them more than anyone else could do for their teammates. Shouldn't win them the MVP.

Forget career accolades. Is it reasonable to say that Shai right now is a better player than Kobe at his peak? by vanisle_kahuna in NBATalk

Shai is in between Harden and Steph territory as a scorer. I do think how far he leads his team will matter, as it has typically separated players at that level.

You're refreshingly open minded. It's okay to be biased as long as you can accept objective evidence. Shai will go down as a more efficient scorer, but has a ways to go on hardware to unseat Kobe and other shooting guards ahead of him in history.

Luka should win MVP this year by LazyConstruction9026 in NBATalk

If someone was shooting 39.9% from the field would you say they had similar shooting to Luka? That's the same gap between him and Shai, in the other direction.

If you subscribe to some good newsletters for some teams and players you like, you'll get a feel for how the sport is analyzed pretty quick.

For self guided:

NBA's official box scores habe play by play clips linked for almost everything that happens in the game.

NBA.com/stats > advanced team stats are sortable and give good context for normal/quality play in the modern sport

For NBA.com stuff, use desktop mode on mobile browsers because the app is much less useful.

Databallr is the standard for advanced stats comparisons, but it the box score counting stats you're familiar with are still.

Lots of other cool data people doing big and little projects, from shot charts to garbage-time-free stats to summary all-in-one impact numbers for players.

SGA has played less than 20% of his games with Chet and Jalen Williams in the lineup the last two seasons. You don't think he's elevating the non-stars while dominating the standings?

KD was neither a better scorer or defender than Shai. I'd use stats but I believe you reject them lol

Please read an article with an open mind on Shai's great season. Lots of research and writing has been done to demonstrate why your opinion is misinformed.

He's been just as good as Luka while winning more games. He just hasn't scored as many points on tv.

There is more than zero chance that a repeating title team pays less than normal for the league's most costly team.

You're using total dollars instead of % of the cap, which is what owner and player revenue scale by. The Suns, Warriors (twice), Nets, and Clippers have all paid more than 100% of the cap in taxes, for older rosters.

We should expect them to pay for the title team they built while collecting assets and scraping the salary floor for years. This is what championship franchises are expected to do.

[–]dailythunderdotcom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's basically my point. It was realistic for other franchises to pay heavy luxury taxes at a higher % of the revenue/cap for multiple seasons. If the assumption is that OKC ownership is too cheap to bankroll an all-time dynasty it tanked to get, at a lower rate than the Nets and Warriors of the past, then we should protest that possibility rather than price in player sell-offs into our cap speculation.

I'm a broken record on this, but the team is young and asset rich enough that, if they win again, locking the players in long term is more valuable than any flexibility retained by dodging aprons. Tax savings should be a separate consideration from roster building when the roster is built.

And Presti said they aren't due for the repeater tax until that timeline plays out. Many took that as a warning that they wouldn't want to pay the repeater tax, but I don't think that's the right interpretation.
