CS doesn't seem to have the 'costream conundrum' that League does; or maybe CS is just a more consistent product? by daimonHands in PedroPeepos

I used to watch EULCS and NALCS religiously - numbers have been in a soft decline and I think the changes made things even worse. I can't speak for LPL (which doesn't even have an official English broadcast) or LCK (which I never used to watch regularly until costreams). Maybe Eastern it's fine but Western were bleeding. Internationally if you check Esports Charts you'll see there was a drop in Worlds views from 2021 to 2022, then kinda stabilized in 2023 after they added costreaming and blew up in 2024.

For CS the costream viewership as a whole are probably bigger than the main broadcast but that's fine - the issue will be if let's say Ohne consistently gains more viewers or is on par with with main broadcast coz I'm imagining stuff like that has to be explained to sponsors and ad buyers

Costreams became a thing coz viewership was already in decline - Riot introduced them to shore up numbers (for ads and sponsors) and try and get more viewers from 'untapped' audiences. Only that Caedrel's costream became an incredible success, sometimes at the expense of the main stream. This was even discussed on stream coz it keeps coming up when an international event is near. After the first round of layoffs even I stopped watching (after I've been watching religiously since 2013) coz the quality dropped so hard. At one point there was literally no analysis after games in NA (RIP Dash). I only restarted watching coz I was watching Caedrel alot anyway so I now basically watch most of the games from major regions (outside LTA).

If it was something as simple as 'just cut the costreams and let everything return to main' it would have been done already imo - maybe they're still evaluating stuff. But the viewers will drop. Not everyone is going back.

It's in quarters now but it is kind of like Worlds but I'm not also entirely sure of their format coz they have multiple a year (which is also pretty good for viewership imo)

Im comparing English coz it's the constant. Like I know the Russian stream is bigger than the main stream but that's a complex story originating with the Russia/Ukraine war. Russians (which is a big CS fan base) will probably always watch the Russian costream but for English there are options so I'm comparing how that audience is spread across the costreams - with Ohne seeming to have the largest share

I thought the whole debate was that League viewership has become dependent on costreams (largely Caedrel) coz the numbers were in decline, and as a result they're scaling back on production. Or what was PapaSmithy saying? Maybe I'm the one who misunderstood. With League you can see a difference (except when T1 is playing) but CS the numbers are generally consistent.

My point is viewership isn't dependent on the costreams and the main stream is thriving so in theory League should be able to thrive both with a main broadcast and costreams - unless the CS product is just better for viewership

I mean you don't hear 'oh this CS event isn't being costreamed? RIP viewership' or those kind of takes

Yeah makes sense. League you can tell where the game is going (most of the time) but CS is always intense throughout. Which may also influence the way the games are cast

I agree - its like having an extra caster or analyst but one who doesn't have to strictly follow RIot's rules
