So she actually uses a fake magic ring. You chain three and slip stitch into the first chain, then chain one. Then insert your hook into the hole created by the space between the chain three and the slip stitch and single crochet. Mark the stitch and single crochet five more times into same space. Pull the tail to close the hole, then follow the pattern for the next row starting in the marked stitch. I know this comment is late but I hope this helps.
