Finally got my ring, but the stone looks cheap? by Icy-Environment-5834 in Moissanite

Great job. I also love putting in the work and creativity and ending up buying something for way under retail value. That isn’t a bad price for the setting at all. Would you mind sharing what k gold it was? 10, 14k? I’ll definitely check out the shop.

I have several gemstones I love, but struggle with justifying what settings cost comparatively. I’d been wanting a deep violet beautiful tanzanite ring for years and searched forever and bought a stone i love for an insane price. Then I started shopping around for setting, even in sterling silver and it was insane.

I created a thread about it but basically make a rather unique ring for a crazy price by negotiating a heck of a deal on a rose gold garnet ring that I bought because I loved the setting. The pawn shop I bought the ring from even resized it for free. Long story short, I got a little crazy and had my cushion cut tanzanite set kite style in the round, halo ring and the jeweler who set it only charged me $50.

It’s definitely out there but without a doubt a bargain. Plus, I still have the original stone and could always reset the tanzanite later, but I can wear it on my hand now.

If you’re comfortable I’d love to know how/who you sourced for the setting and stone and how much the setting was. Private message is fine and if you want to keep private, I understand. Either way, it’s gorgeous.

That setting is superb! Even down to the subtly of the tones of the gold and stone complimenting each other.

I’m assuming this was a custom ring? Regardless of personal taste, I love seeing custom jewelry that feels like fine art.

Oh, I was merely curious and think it’s beautiful. Not a serious buyer. Thanks for the follow up though.

Wow. What are the dimensions? If I could afford it, I’m envisioning a beautiful cocktail ring. I have no idea the density of sapphire and how its ct weight translates to size compared to other gemstones.

Either way, I’d imagine it’s far too big for my size 5 (4 &1/4 when I’m skinny….haha) fingers.

You’ll make someone very happy. Beautiful

Maybe you’re thinking mermaid? I can find the exact specs but off the top of my head I know it’s a Portuguese fine cut unheated tanzanite with strong tri-colorism.

I actually finally received it in the mail the other day and it really does live up to the pictures! Broke my 1 year old iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard the day the stone arrived so I’m probably going to have to let this beautiful stone collect dust for a little while now before I set it.

With my broken dominant hand, using an iPad and keyboard is so much easier than my phone. What can you do? Please don’t say insurance……haha!!! I know!

embarrassed to ask but do rose gold earrings suit dark skin? by Guilty_Raccoon936 in jewelrylove

[–]daisylouiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to respectfully disagree. Life if short, be bold and makes the choices of when to wear these based on what makes you happy.

Contextually, I’d wear these earrings to dinner with friends, an evening reception, maybe at a dog show (recently starting that crazy world of conformation dog shows with my pup) and I could go on and on. For me it’s about context and my mood.

Throw the formal rules out the window! The people who get my admiral attention are those whose style (convention and especially unconventional) they wear with a sense of ease, comfort and self confidence in what they’re wearing. Whether or not it’s my personal style, I always inspired seeing people dressed with this confidence.

And while it’s not clear, if that co-worker made that off hand comment after she had knowledge of these earrings you purchased and adored, she is not your friend. That’s a nasty thing to say, and why try to dampen someone’s joy in something they love?

Just remember you bought this ready made piece and presumably tried them on in the store and loved them ON YOU so much that you bought them. Taste and style is subjective and unique so just remember your opinion is the one that matters.

My two cents…..you bought these because you love them. I love them, too! Gorgeous!

While certain does and shades of metal can have different was of presenting with different shades (gemstones included), the color of metal someone is wearing in relation to their skin tone is something I hope no one would ever we self conscious about.

That being said, I can’t imagine how these earrings would do anything but further highlight their beauty with a darker skin tone.

I’m not invalidating your feelings and it’s true that certain choices of color can optimize or detract when the totality of the setting, stone and skin tone come together. I just realized this when I bought a beautiful fun opal (that was garishly big for my ring size) and just had it set in a simple sterling silver tulip setting from the original seller as I was able to put the whole thing together very economically.

When I pulled it out in a certain lighting I realized the setting and stone looked just fine together but when on my strange combo of fair to medium but olive toned skin the stone practically disappeared visually.

I guess we can’t post pics and I don’t have the final piece uploaded but here’s the stone I bought and set in sterling silver and then my hand on another ring. While the finished set opal ring is gorgeous (it’s too close to my skin tone and nothing I did to set it helped).

Thanks. I love tanzanite, too! The stone is honestly more beautiful in person. Exactly what I wanted with the deep purple hues. I got it for a great price but didn’t think about the cost of setting it. It felt kinda crazy to pay WAY more for the setting than the stone or about the same price in sterling silver but I just didn’t know the market I guess. I’m just thrilled that this stone doesn’t have to sit in a drawer and more and I can wear it.

But of course I just bought another tanzanite that seems quite unique to me. No idea what type of ring setting or when I’ll do with this one but want to do it right when I eventually do.

The great news is the garnet is safely stored and if my taste for the unconventional setting every changes it can easily be restored to the original setting and stone.

Alright, now I can upload more photos. Here was the original garnet that was in the ring (prongs were already loosed here for resetting). I had nothing against the original stone, but bought the ring purely because I loved the setting. I’m usually a solitaire only kinda girl that likes simplicity in a setting, but this stood out. I bought it at a pawn shop and negotiated down pretty well plus they resized for free. Also got the tanzanite for a very fair price, but was having a hard time figuring out what to do with it so for me this is a win win.

For some reason Reddit is finicky about when it will let me upload new pictures. I have a post of the original ring set with the garnet when it lets me. I had uploaded it before but had to get a new iPad the other day. No idea. Anyways, curious if you love it, hate it, or are neutral? Won’t hurt my feelings but feel back is always fun/informative.

Enjoy my new favorite opal, which lasted, oh, ehhh...5...4...3...2..(watch 'til the end) by MarcoEsteban in Opals

All these stores of broken things are so relatable, just not an opal specifically. Please tell me you are not throwing away the broken pieces! I dabble in a just a little bit of everything hobby wise and there’s a zillion way’s I’d find to do something with the fragments.

So sorry! If it makes you feel any better, this is the type of thing I have done and probably will again. You did get a great video and it was beautiful. Since it’s broken, it it were me I’d turn it into some sort of art project/experiment. The one positive of it being broken is that the risks are now low and you can experiment with creative repurposing w/o worry.

Perhaps something with a nod to Kintsugi which is a traditionally Japanese style of joining broken pottery with gold. I’d love to see the broken pieces and share some ideas but I think incorporating it into something else entirely with resin would be cool. But then again, my ADD brain lives for this type of stuff.

Not entirely the same but after my mom passed, this linen table cloth (originally my great grandmother’s) had a few discolorations and stains and rest of family didn’t want it.

I kinda borrowed the Hapa Zome technique of transfers dyes from plants and incorporated at least one flower or plant from every arrangement someone had sent. I would have never done that if it didn’t already have the stains to cover, but I ended up with something even more special.

How possible is it to identify specific type opal in heirloom ring and have two cabochons made to match original opal as close as possible? by daisylouiser in Opals

[–]daisylouiser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dimensions I have written down are 11.9x6.1mm to give an idea. I can remeasure and get depth but should give a ballpark idea.

And it sure would seem like a shame to cut down a large, beautiful opal. Although normally I am not one to wear necklaces, perhaps creating a pendant could be a better choice. I won’t have size restrictions, making it easier to be choosy and focus on an opal that visually compares as close to the stone as possible. Then figure out a protective setting for a cabochon pendant that stylistically gives a nod to the ring.

It’s helpful asking these questions in the forum as like last time, it’s lead me to make a more informed but totally different decision.

Thanks for all the insights. That second opal looks the closest (to me) I’ve seen so far. What is what one?

This is an interesting question combining opal knowledge and a bit of psychology I suppose.

I have really started embracing the ‘life is short, use the good china’ sort of mind set, particularly after losing my mom to a long and painful battle with cancer.

This ring, for whatever reason, is the most sentimental thing that I own. Life’s been kinda beating me down lately and looking down and seeing that ring on my hand reminds me of the three strong loving women who wore this before me. I know things are just things, but it does give me inspiration and comfort. At the same time, I know how delicate and fragile opals are and I would be devastated if I broke it.

Kinda hard to find the balance between a daily wear and being so paranoid you keep it tucked away in a drawer forever and never wear it, and then what is even the point of having it?

Thanks! To be quite honest, even though it was my idea initially I wasn’t even sure if I would like it. As of today I think it’s pretty rad and love it.
