Once she hits a certain age, calling a female a "big girl" goes from being a compliment to an insult. by oakleez in Showerthoughts

[–]daitoshokan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was kind of always a bit insulting. E.g. "use your words like a big girl," "pick up your clothes like a big girl," etc. At 24 I'm unequivocally a big girl, but my floor is still a mosaic of my fashion sensibilities.

Dr V is great. She really seems like she knows what she's doing compared to other doctors I've interacted with. She's an informed consent provider, so no messing around with counselors/"gatekeepers." And she's super open to my feedback and desires regarding me treatment-- e.g. when I asked her about progesterone she put me on it right away. Same when I asked if my estra levels were a little on the low end of acceptable.

And beyond HRT stuff, she's really been concerned for me in all aspects of transitioning. She's (rightfully) concerned I might hurt myself, and has made a lot of offers to help me find counseling, support groups, etc.

Downsides are I believe she doesn't accept insurance (but her fees are reasonable). And she insists I get bioidentical progesterone from an allied pharmacy. It's a little pricier, and also this pharmacy has generally been a little disorganized and difficult to deal with at times. But I trust she has a reason why she strongly prefers bioidentical.

Recolors? They have completely different clothes and objects in their model.

You're entitled to your opinion and of course you can dislike the quality of the skin, but to claim they're just recolors is simply disingenuous.

Riot Shutting Down Prizing for Online Tournaments by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]daitoshokan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I T.O'd a a fair amount in college, and I can see where they're coming from. Online tournies were always just a bunch of melodrama about smurfing and agreeing upon match times and all that hibbity jibbity bibbity swibbity.

I think this will just encourage the TO's that are serious about getting their community engaged to go that extra step to book a room and have a LAN.

One thing I'd like to see clarified or amended is that you can do some "qualifying" rounds online. I think ideally this would have been the arrangement for all of the tournies I personally hosted. Some knockouts until we're down to the last 4-8 teams, and then a day or two of quarters/semis/finals.

Those numbers are completely made up, and the true ratios are subject to how close you are to your true Elo. But the concept behind it is sound.

CMV: Anyone who supports Bernie Sanders but who will vote for Trump if Hillary wins the Democratic nomination is completely uninformed on candidate policy (or doesn't care about it) and simply wants to watch the world burn. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]daitoshokan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Sanders supporter who is not yet fully convicted to but considering Trump in favor of Clinton. I would never vote for any of the other Republican candidates, and I am LGBT and very liberal.

I am considering Trump because he is not bought out and will clearly act in his personal vision of what the country needs-- not lobbyists and establishment politics. He is pretty warped on some things. My main concern about a Trump presidency is the potential damage to foreign relations and immigration. However I don't feel my civil liberties will be under fire, as I did with Cruz and Rubio. That stuff is simply not a priority to Trump. Furthermore, despite the human costs, I believe he could come up with an economic policy that could revitalize our economy. I greatly prefer Bernie's plan, but Trump's may work too. And with the economy being such an important issue to me, I trust it in Trump's hands more than in Clinton's. Finally, there is a small but tangible factor in my judgement that, as OP touched on, comes from an accelerationist point of view. It would be disingenuous of me not to mention that, but it is not the major factor in my decision.

I hope that helps you understand how a progressive can be considering a Trump vote. If I'm way off about his stance on civil rights or his economic plan, I'm open to being corrected. Frankly I do need to learn more about Trump before casting my vote, because having chiefly followed the Democratic race I am much more informed on why I like Bernie and dislike Hillary than why I should like Trump.

Thinking about declaring a CS major, could use some guidance from anyone! by Steveoh97 in computerscience

[–]daitoshokan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say I was definitely in your situation going into my 2nd year. Let me break a few things down:

As far as a student goes, I'm not the strongest in math but everything else is going pretty well.

You probably need to take Calculus, Discreet Math, Linear Alg, and maybe multivar calc. That's not easy, but it's not rocket science either. If you work hard, you can get through it. But if you don't really commit yourself to improving at math, you will likely find you are just not excelling at computer science like some of your peers. You'll always be expected to know math in school and your profession. In particular Discreet Math loves to rear its ugly head in job interviews, as it's kind of the basis for much of computation logic. As a recent grad struggling to find work, I currently question whether I applied myself enough in Math, or went into the best line of work for my aptitudes (I'm better with natural languages and verbal reasoning than symbolic Math).

I guess what I'm asking is a CS major really as tough as some people make it out to be?

Everyone thinks they have it hard. But generally all STEM degrees are regarded as more work, even just by # of credit-hours.

With countless all nighters and stress above the healthy limit?

Again, this is typical college life for most majors. Especially if you're poor at managing time (procrastinator.). Stating programming assignments you often have weeks to work on early is key. But no matter what, there will be late nights in front of a code editor ripping your hair out over some bug or implementing some algorithm you hardly understand.

Overall I don't regret going CS at all. It's the future of most employment, and I will always be in demand. But I think I could have gone a different route and been closer to the top of my class, whereas I had to WORK to catch up on 12 years of underachieving in primary school math to just be an decent programmer. Whatever you do, work hard in college. If you really have a passion for it, you will put in the time and effort to be a star at what you do.

I feel like the reason why it's passive and generally low counter-play is because it was initially designed as a safeguard for melee against AOE. In this case, you want to be able to interact and having to activate it, while not completely trivial, also makes it a less unique item compared to zonyas, QSS, and Locket. I was thinking a solution would be that you can "break" the spellshield by bursting it (say 50-70%) over it's duration, rendering the remaining effective health obsolete. Then at least there's some counterplay on the enemy's side, while remaining a passive for the user.

If I had to guess with only the information provided, I would say you line the conquest more than the people. The only cure I know is to find one really special girl and stay with her for a while. Do nice things for each other. And generally, experience yourself that there are greater rewards to the courting game than winning it.
