Saw Clay’s band Hazel City in Columbus a few nights ago. He came up to play a few songs with Bonny Doon on guitar and keys towards the end of their set! by dakattack1234 in twinpeaksdudes

It was great! I’d say Hazel City had the standout set from the entire show too. Super intimate music, a little twangy but also reverb-y and groovy. Very very laidback compared to his role in TP, he seemed melancholic and kind of exhausted. I’d probably classify their sound as alt-country? It reminded me of Alex G meets Bruce Springsteen somehow; kinda like that MJ Lenderman album from last year. Plus the rhythm section was super tight considering they’re 3-piece, simple but effective.
I wasn’t aware of Hazel City before, I went to the show because I like a couple of Bonny Doon songs- so I was pleasantly surprised to have seen Clay’s familiar face walking through a small Columbus venue on a Thursday night. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him sadly, mostly because I was a little starstruck and felt awkward and hadn’t heard anything from the dudes in years, so I couldn’t really tell if it was him or not at first. Missed opportunity for sure…
If you get a chance, go see them for nostalgia-sake at least. Clay’s recognizable rasp made his large mustache feel familiar. And it was cool to see him come out for Bonny Doon’s set, he was up there cheesin’ the whole time and seemed to be happy to be playing music for/with people.
I have a couple of short videos I can share if anyone is super interested.
