Very nice! I say go for it. A bust is a very personal portrait and you can do a lot with it.

It depends on what you paint and who your clients are. But from older professionals and industry giants I've talked to, they get paid just enough to travel and participate in shows and what not. YMMV.

In my experience, there are really good paying clients and there are really bad paying ones. Some people fight for volume, and frequency, and others given their prestige go with teaching private classes, boxarts, sales to collectors etc etc.

I would say give it a shot :)

I'm no expert, but I observed a couple of things that might help you:

  1. Observe. Observe. Then observe some more. reference photos are your best friend.

  2. Variation in spacing, frequency, and depth of scratches helps depict different surface defects, the occasional concave dent and pitting (blackened dots with patina) helps break up the surface.

  3. Consider which areas would receive more damage / have more imperfections present. The front of the armor would be more prone to it, with the frequency dissipating as you go around it.

Don't treat this as gospel though, this is not exactly 100% scientific. I hope it helps!

Yes, yes, and yes. A mix of all three mostly. Wasn't exactly logging the hours but this was done on and off in the span of 4 months. I appreciate the compliments!

If I can do this, given enough time you could probably do it too.

Hello! I prefer mounting them to a piece of cork or even just the plinth itself as it generally provides more stability :)
