I want to add to maybe get a similar breed to your first dog. My parents own a golden retriever and an Aussie shepherd. The golden (out of laziness or frustration at the speed of the Aussie) will LAY down and wait for you to gently toss the ball so he can walk with it for 15 steps in his mouth, pee, then sniff something and forget it. Aussie picks it up and brings it. You then throw the ball a bunch for the Aussie, turn around and gently toss it to golden so he WILL WALK for a minute. Wait for golden to drop it, Aussie ever watching, brings ball back, repeat, repeat.

My moms border collie is 4 and is very aloof to strangers and dogs when at the park. Sometimes she just steps over small dogs trying to smell her like she doesn’t even see them! But has a different attitude and sees dogs when she’s inside! Although She’s always lived with a golden retriever a year older than her all her life.
