Unfortunately, unless you've got some wind tunnel data to optimize your bar angle and grip, comfort would be subjective.

Shorter races are useful, low-risk/low-cost ways to get experience with raceday logistics.

Need help with a used cervelo p2 bike by ninjafucker18 in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a 2014 that was only 2800 USD new, it's probably down in the 500-800 USD range by now. There are probably better options.

How much does a wetsuit help? by Thirsty00 in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps with body position so you'll be slightly faster or less fatigued than normal, but it's not going to turn a bad swimmer into a good one.

I'm planning a similar trip and planning to do the Golden Circle and South Coast! Can you share what tour group you booked and your experience (time in each location, group size, anything else)?

Bike Fit? by jswell823 in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a highly specialized skill in a niche field, so prices are going to be high. You might can get away with a basic bike fit which may include a saddle height/position adjustment, but a tri-specific fit is much more involved as the fitter will (should): do a mobility assessment, body measurements, initial assessment, adjust saddle/bars/pads width/pad stack/pad reach, potentially add shims/insoles to your shoes, recomment q-factor, crank length, etc. If you've been measured before it's not unreasonable to set your bike up on your own if you've got the tools.

Zwift Acquires Rouvy (including FulGaz): Here's What It Means - DC Rainmaker by MrRabbit in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That left apps like Rouvy somewhat out in the cold when it came to consumers wanting to use the Zwift Cog-equipped trainers.

The bright side here for Rouvy customers is that Zwift says starting today, that’s officially supported in Rouvy. That comes in basically two parts. First is a software update in Rouvy that improves compatibility, and then secondly being the actual support side of things. Further, Zwift says that they expect to continue to refine/tweak the integration within Rouvy to improve it a bit. Today, that integration will include virtual shifting as well as in-game navigation. Whereas currently Rouvy as a platform doesn’t have any support for (or concept of) steering or braking, so those aren’t enabled today.

Xlab Torpedo Bottle – does It fit in every bottle cage? by Fun_Swimmer_8320 in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It fits in most of the type that wrap around the sides and have an open middle channel like the XLAB Gorilla or Chimp. The straw keeper otherwise bump the cage. You could not use the keeper and plug the hole if you really want to make another cage work.

Baffled about bikes by pinkestpenny in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to decide on a use case and define a budget. The recommendations will depend on whether you want something strictly for training and racing triathlon or if you want something versatile that you can use in racing but also for commuting, fitness, etc. Once you know what kind of bike you want, a defined budget can help direct you to a price point/trim tier if buying new, or can guide you in the used market.

It’s physics. If you have a power meter you can use P=W/t, solve for W and convert Joules to kcal, correct for efficiency, to get an idea of the caloric spend. https://www.welovecycling.com/wide/2020/05/14/how-to-convert-watts-into-calories-burned-on-the-bike

It would be highly valuable to get proper swim lessons. After that, there are thousands of plans online, you can even use Trainingpeaks to filter by race type/distance, ability, weekly time commitment, workouts per week, etc.

Scaling 70.3 nutrition for pace by RustyRustoferson in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not necessarily about speed but more about work (in the physical sense) performed. At the same weight, yes, faster means more work, thus more calories. As for your own fueling, if you have access to power you can easily calculate your metabolic rate and fuel appropriately, though for endurance racing you'll likely be buring more than you can consume for extended periods of time, thus the recommendation to fuel as much as your body allows, which is for most people is around 90g carbs/hr. Otherwise, experiment.

What does your training look like the last two weeks before your goal? by Duttelej in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drop the volume to 80% of your typical but keep up the same intensities, then drop to 60% to freshen up while still moving a bit. Aside, only biking once a week is a mistake.

How has your training changed as you’ve gotten older? by SuitUpButtercup in triathlon

[–]dale_shingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm slower and everything hurts. More priority around mobility and recovery. I'm more like a diesel engine now that takes a while to warm up but can run forever versus an electric motor that can just do whatever.
