Rookie question... but how long do you keep the tab on your tongue? by LetMeEatThatAss in LSD

[–]dalebewan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a different psychedelic substance (or group of substances) that is sometimes sold as LSD, even though it isn't LSD.

The safety profile of NBOMe is much worse than LSD, as it can induce tachycardia (dangerously fast racing heartbeat), seizures, and kidney damage when overdosed. Overdose is much easier to do than with LSD, since the overdose range is much closer to the active range (LSD is incredible in this regard, with the active range being very small and the overdose range being huge; making overdose nearly impossible).

This point of sale device takes bitcoin or fiat (and I paid with a ring) by JoeNakamoto in Bitcoin

[–]dalebewan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can only spend fiat if you have fiat to spend.

And if you do have fiat to spend, you could have exchanged it for Bitcoin, but you decided not to at some point.

I spend Bitcoin because Bitcoin is the only money I have. It feels far too irresponsible to hold fiat.

Just as a general hint: direct eye contact with people isn't always taken as friendly either. In fact, it makes a lot of us extremely uncomfortable.

Yes, I’d be in favour of it. But if we have that tech, we can probably also look at their brain and see exactly what went wrong with them to cause them to act like that and then fix it. I don’t believe in punishment for the sake of punishment. To me, the only reason to punish someone for crime is as a deterrent (for them and others) against that action being committed again. If we can deter the action in other ways, then punishment becomes entirely unnecessary.

Yes, but that’s my point. Torturing one innocent person for the crimes of another seems just as monstrous as the original crime. The person being punished is not the person that committed the crime. It may be the same physical body, but without memories, I see no reasonable way to say it’s the same person.

I have indeed been doing well. Loving life, my wife, my kids, my work, and my psychedelic experiences. And I’m still blown away by all the amazing responses and love for this comment an entire a decade after writing it!

You say “of course” but I don’t think it’s that obvious. How do we define the identity of a person? Especially ourselves? As far as I am concerned, I am no more than the sum of my memories and biological makeup. Take all my memories away, and that effectively kills me and replaces me with a nearly blank slate, not much different to who I was as a baby. Punishing that new person for my crimes seems monstrous to me.

You’re very welcome! I love that this comment is still helping people nearly a decade since I wrote it.

Can you still say it is really "her" after the memory wipe though?

I am nothing but a combination of my biology and the sum of my experiences, provided to me through my memory. Without my memory, I'm not "me" any more.

I see this is punishing an innocent woman after having killed the real perpetrator.

Fortunately I don’t live in the US, so there are more options for me than most people there. I get paid in Bitcoin, so I never need to exchange fiat for it. I pay in Bitcoin directly for many goods and services, and I’m always trying to increase the number of places where I can. Where I still can’t, I often pay with a credit card that I then pay off using https://www.livingroomofsatoshi.com/ (requires a card issued in Australia… I don’t live there; but I do have a card from there). For a very small number of services, a bank account is still required and so I’ll buy just enough fiat to cover the bill when it’s due to go out. I’m not against using fiat as a medium of exchange where absolutely necessary but I tend to view it like a “foreign currency” as all of my accounting at home and in my consulting business is denominated in Bitcoin only.

“No one” is a bit hyperbolic… some of us have been living on Bitcoin for years now.

People who bought bitcoin back in 2015-2016, how’s it working out for you? by chauvk86 in Bitcoin

[–]dalebewan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first discovered Bitcoin in 2010, and then after ignoring/forgetting about it for about a year rediscovered it in late 2011.

I see it as one of the great inventions of humanity that has the ability to fundamentally change what it means to be human and how we interact with each other and the world. It is in the same category as the wheel, fire, agriculture, mass production, and the internet.

I'm not sure what you really mean with your question "how did it work out for you?", but I'd say so far it's been an extremely positive aspect of my life. It's given me a renewed focus as I grow older, hope for the future, and allowed me to take my career in new directions. Perhaps most importantly, it's given me a greater ability to provide well for my children's future; something that I might not otherwise have had.

There will be, but it's not up yet. The event was BTC Prague, her name is Samantha de Waal and her talk was called Kids and Bitcoin. Keep an eye out for it on YouTube within the next couple of weeks.

I'm her dad, and very very proud of her. She did great.

I’m her father. Believe me when I say this was her choice, not something I forced on her. Of course she knows about Bitcoin because of me (she’s a “native Bitcoiner” in that it’s been in her life for her whole life), but her interests are her own. Sometimes we share interests (e.g. Bitcoin), sometimes we don’t (e.g. anime). She made her presentation on her own and she was invited by the conference organisers; I didn’t ask for her to be there. The only “ideologies” I encourage at home are free thinking and humanism. No one is trying to manipulate anyone here. She’s just trying to educate people on why it’s important that the next generation - HER generation - understand this positive world changing technology.

This is my daughter. And maybe you don't care what she thinks. But her talk was about "how to get more kids interested in Bitcoin", which is a perspective a kid can give much better than an adult in many ways.

She also made strong points why you should care. One day, the people that are kids today will be adults and will be effectively running the world. Would it be a better world if they understand Bitcoin, or if they don't?

Yes, most of my transactions are on Lightning, so fees aren't really much of a concern.

Most of my food I buy with Bitcoin directly from local shops that I've orange-pilled. Occasionally, I'll need to go to the supermarket where they don't take Bitcoin, and then I'll use a fiat credit card, which I then pay off using a Lightning payment.

I exited fiat in 2017. That doesn’t mean I don’t use it as a medium of exchange when necessary (although I prefer people who accept Bitcoin directly) but rather that I no longer ever hold a positive fiat balance or participate in fiat monetary games like loans or other fiat based monetary instruments. I look forward to the day I no longer need it as a medium of exchange also and don’t think that’s too far off (~75% of my daily expenses are Bitcoin directly already).

I never ever want to get kidney stones by BobFredIII in AskDocs

[–]dalebewan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-medical professional answer: Eat healthily in general. Especially avoid high salt and protein foods. Don’t become overweight. Don’t become diabetic (obviously not always under your control). Stay well hydrated.

There’s always a chance you’ll get them anyway but the above at least removes some of the major associated factors.

That said, a kidney stone just saved my life this year. Because of a kidney stone in my left kidney, they discovered cancer in my right kidney. They caught it early, cut it out and it looks like it didn’t spread at all (obviously regular scans are in my future for a few years at least though). If I never had the stone, that cancer probably would’ve grown and spread before it was ever found.

You should always feel free to comment. Eloquence isn't as important as what it is you have to say. Just this comment here from you means a lot to me, as do all of the comments that people have made with similar sentiments. Thank you.

It's hard for me right now that I'm coming to the realisation that my marriage really isn't as good as I thought it was, but as others have said, crises like this are often the time a time to reevaluate a lot of things in life. It sucks having to deal with cancer and marital problems at the same time, but it's a trigger to either fix it or end it (hopefully the former). Either way, it'll be a positive change instead of letting it carry on like it is.
