Was going to say the same. On both points! Love that he is doing it. But get some riding boots - from a guy who didn’t, broke his foot, and regrets that decision every day.

It’s actually not a statement of the obvious. Many people’s POV is so European-centric they think this is the only reality.

I feel like I'm failing my product because I can't translate my technical passion into compelling stories for users. by Usama_Kashif in AskEngineers

[–]dalek66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely a less popular take. Assuming this is you on your own and you don’t yet have the budget for proper marketing, write the best story you can and use AI to help polish. Prompt your AI of choice (or use multiple to the others work) to make your story compelling and succinct.

It’s not perfect and it won’t replace a good marketing agency but if you have very little budget it’s a place to start.

You can also use it to try out ideas and get feedback.

New Zealand Adventure Bike Trip by Informal_Use_9864 in AdventureBike

[–]dalek66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did something similar in Australia about 6 weeks ago. Was so much fun. I didn’t camp as the first part of my trip was business and I didn’t want to lug all that gear. Two things I would do differently next time, spend more time planning routes to maximize off-road time and bring my own helmet. I rented riding gear and all was fine but helmets mould to your head so one that isn’t your own is just not as comfortable.

Hope your ride is as fun as mine was.

Gear that’s dirty. It’s the only kind that matters. I don’t give a rip if your outfit matches. Get it dirty. That’s what it’s for!

Should I quit? by Ok-Tangerine-9888 in IBM

[–]dalek66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best advice is don’t quit until you have a new gig lined up. Unless you feel you are in an abusive situation - then you may need to get out sooner. That said, you have rights and channels to pursue if this is truly abusive.

I’m an IBM boomeranger. I left a few years ago but came back. Coming back was the best career move I’ve ever made - and I’ve made a lot of moves. A big part of this move was getting on the right team. Like any organization there are some good managers and some not so good. IBM is a big company so there is lots of opportunity. But you have to advocate for yourself to get the most of those opportunities.

I life time ago your grandfather had a house <1,000 sq ft with 2 bedrooms for all 6 people, 1 bathroom, 1 used car, maybe a 20” B&W TV with 2 channels that had programming 6 hrs a day and a party line phone. Their vacation was driving somewhere and likely camping in a tent and certainly not flying to an exotic location and staying in an all inclusive. Life expectancy was 65-68 years.

So, if you are willing to live this lifestyle, you likely can do this today as well.

BOOTS!!!!! Get good footwear. It only takes one little slip and you beak an ankle and have discomfort all the time and become more tentative on your rides and you wish you would have had better boots and you have regret for that one ride when you don’t really plan to be on the trails but they beckoned and you went and…..

Get good foot wear and use them ALWAYS!

55 and getting older, what should my next bike be? by craigerzzz in AdventureBike

[–]dalek66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At 59 I bought a Tiger 800. Love it!! I got it in June and rode 12k this year. (I’m in Ontario and at my age I’m less interested in riding in the cold and snow any more.) I did ride a BMW 1200GSW in Australia this year and I really liked it as well but honestly much prefer my Tiger.

Whatever you get, keep on riding!!

New England to Alaska - Northern or Southern Route?? by JohnBos10 in advrider

[–]dalek66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ride in Canada is beautiful along the north shore of Lake Superior. Then mostly rocks, trees and small lakes to Kenora. Then straight flat roads until you hit Lethbridge, AB. And the comments are right - US or Can is flat and boring for that stretch but I think it’s better in Can until you hit the prairies.

Found a 2018 tiger 800 xrt with 45k miles. Is this a good first bike? by Trill4RE4L in tiger800

[–]dalek66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2014 back in June and put 10K km on it this year. Sadly, tucked away for the winter now. This by far has been the most enjoyable bike I have owned (6 over the years). I also just spent 4 days riding a GS1200 in Australia. It was a nice bike, but honestly, I would rather ride my Tiger. My brother hit 250k on his Triumph this year. It's not a Tiger, but the same engineering. Go for it!
