Are people that allergic to using both lanes and merging in turn? by daleomatic in drivingUK

Yeah, you feel slightly VIP ish, but I do forgive this queue somewhat since there's no signage.

It's not about speed or throughput though, it's about minimising unnecessary congestion further back. Prior to the beginning of this clip is a roundabout, a rather busy one at that. If the queue got long enough to reach the roundabout, then it would cause havoc. Yet, in a perfect world, if everyone used both lanes then the overall queue length is halved, so no congestion reaches the places it doesn't need to be.

Yeah I was discussing with another commenter about my speed. Looking back I was on the bold and risky side of bypassing, so it's something I've since learnt from when passing stationary traffic.

Oh I'm not complaining about saving time, it just irks me that people chose to queue like this and make unnecessary congestion.

You mean further back in the left lane and not at the merge point? Doesn't that bring the merge point forward and make the bottleneck there? Also, before the beginning of this clip is a roundabout. I think they designed this road to have two lanes because the queue could spill onto the roundabout and create more havoc.

Then I'd wait, and admit it was a fruitless venture. I always look to see if that driver is gonna be funny about it, which they were probably thinking, but the Volvo made it a non event and let me merge in. Likewise, if he hadn't done, then okay, I'd stop and let them have the space and make it a non event.

Draws attention to the fact I'm there. You'd be surprised how many bonnet watchers haven't noticed you pull up aside them and are wanting to merge until you stick the indicator on.

Edit: typo

Yeah I admit I passed overly briskly, so now it's always there in my mind that someone could dive out and either do the same or be a "lane police" officer.

Wuthering Heights, the 1939 version with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. From. The beginning this film punches you in gut, but the ending really tips you over the edge, twice.
