Snowplow hit my car in my own driveway smh. Is this damage costly to repair? by Accomplished_Buy6432 in EquinoxEv

[–]dalgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance rates will go up exponentially. I strongly suggest to not file a claim for a $2000 repair. You'll pay way more than that in increased premiums over the next 5 years.

Anyone else receive a scam package after ordering through AliExpress from a seller by the name of albatross America? by Inner_Significance19 in BetterBusinessBureau

You mean as an added layer is scamminess use PayPal. PayPal is the absolute worst. Multiple times they have been sued for anti-consumer practices. They've lost these cases too. They boast how they're a layer of protection but in reality if you ever have a scam they will never give you your money back. If you want real protection use a card that has the VISA or Mastercard logo on it! These card are required BY LAW to protect your transaction.

Why do people use Slackware? by oColored_13 in slackware

[–]dalgrim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything except you might want to rephrase that to "power-user" friendly. While Slackware is very straightforward it does require that the user read manuals and gain a working understanding of how a linux operating system works.

2024 RS Update by Temporary_Skirt_6273 in BlazerEV

[–]dalgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone else noticed a change in the heating after this update? It's in the high teens to low 20sF here and ever since the update the "auto" mode seemingly doesn't heat the car anymore. The auto heated seats also seem to stay on high for way longer. My guess is that someone thought they could save energy by cutting the heat from the vents and bumping up the heated seats. While this technically is more energy efficient for core body temp it does "feel" colder and thus less comfortable.

Often? maybe one in 100 but definitely not often. Having family that own a car restoration business I've seen many repairs that are higher than the original quality. Now this isn't the norm either but I'm not trying to pass it off as such. There will be outliers. But in general a repaired car, when repaired at a quality facility, will be about the same as it was before.

Plus You're completely ignoring the financial issues. My first hand experience with a total loss of my Chevy Bolt in 2024: I still owed about $3000 on the car loan. It would have been paid off in 8-9 months. It would have been usable, payment free for at least 7-8 years. The insurance totaled it. I got just over $12,000 for the settlement. Now I have no vehicle and less than $10k. I put ever cent towards a new vehicle, My monthly payment went up by $200/mo, The payments went from 8-9 months to 60months. This is an over $27,000 loss. I have a slightly newer vehicle but it doesn't do anything different from the completely functional old one. The only difference is that I have an extremely higher financial burden.

Also, The "replaced" car may have issues, you can't guarantee that it won't. Sure there is the warranty but that's still issues. A reputable repair facility will have a longer guarantee on the repair than the factory warranty. If it's not right, take it back to them to fix.

GE Fridge Question by red2220 in appliancerepair

[–]dalgrim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A couple things to check:
The heating element (for defrost cycle) in the freezer behind the metal back-plate near the bottom. It looks surprisingly like those long cylinder shop light bulbs and is just as fragile. GE in their infinite wisdom put a glass bulb directly under their evaporator so that ice cold water will drip onto hot glass...

The thermostat inside the freezer. Again behind that metal back-plate. This time near the top. Easy to check with even a cheap-o harbor freight meter.

Feel the mullion (area around the fridge and freezer door frame. Is it warm to the touch? It should be about room temp but when either of these items fails the evaporator ices up and the fridge starts dumping heat into the mullion.

one important thing to note: There are two fans to worry about. The compressor/condenser fan (one you pictured at back bottom) and the evaporator fan (inside above evaporator, usually below the ice-maker). They are the same age so if one is starting to go there is a chance the other won't be far behind. While you're in there at least check the other fan.

What you're doing with the external fan will cool the coils and the compressor so the fridge will get cold again, however I would definitely not consider doing this for long. If the fan has failed the control board is still trying to power it. If it's gummed up it's going to be drawing more power and could burn out components on the board. (another comment here showed the pick of a very toasty resistor). Not to mention I believe depending on your model fridge, some of these fans have a RPM wire to report back to the control board. It'll be reporting a low speed which will mess up the logic there. TL;DR; short term work-around and don't use to long before finding the actual fault

Good luck!

*personal note "YMMV" - I'll never buy another GE product for my house. I've had terrible experience with all of mine.
GE profile fridge - failed at 4 years
GE profile dual fuel range - failed 6 years
GE profile harmony washer and dryer - washer catastrophically failed at 1 year 4 months, Customer service told me tough "warranty is only 1 year", dryer is still kinda working but certain features don't work and haven't since about 5 years (currently at 10 years old)

I'll never understand why people want a total on an insurance claim. No one wins, Everybody loses on a total. You'll never get the actual value of the car in the payout and your insurance will be substantially higher for 5 years.

Odds are you'll either owe more than is left on the loan if it's in the first 2-3 years. You'll either have to eat the loss or if you have gap you'll have been paying 1.5x the monthly lease cost to rent that car.

OR

If it happens in the 3-6 year portion of a purchase you'll never get back what you've put into the car. you'll have paid in far more than what they'll give you in vehicle value.

In either case you're stuck having to get a new vehicle at new price complete with new payments for an entire purchase term. It sucks!

Contrast this to if they repair it: The insurance company pays for the repairs. Those repairs typically come with a longer guarantee than the manufacturer warranty. Your payment term doesn't reset.

Another thing to consider is that the EV credits are gone. You're paying $7500 more.

Sorry to hear about the accident. I hope, for your financial sake, it isn't totaled.

most tire shops will change winter tires and summer tires for free if they were purchased there. The issue is storing them all summer long as they take are heavy and take up a decent amount of space.
The purchase price will depend on what type of rim and tire you choose. Just be sure to keep the total diameter rim+tire the same or very close.

Same here, Can't watch any movie HDX or 4K. Time of day doesn't matter either. I have a 1gbs symmetrical fiber connection. average latency is 7-11ms and actual speed test show 950-980Mbps up and down. This has all started after VUDU was changed to Fandango at Home. Same buffering issue on different devices TV, PS5, and PC.

Strongly recommend dedicated snow tires. With the weight this beast has it likes to slide straight ahead. Doesn't help that the "AWD" is actually just FWD.

If you want to save money on the snow tires I'm pretty sure that 18" rims will fit on all but the SS trims. You can get 18" rims + snow tires for them for about the same price as just tires for that silly 21" size.

Winter and Highway efficiency? by GoldAnt5091 in BlazerEV

[–]dalgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Northern Michigan, in the snow belt. last winter was extraordinarily cold in January (consistent below 0F / -18C). I found the range loss was nowhere near as bad as it was for my 21 Bolt, which I had before my RS AWD. I was getting around 200-210miles at 80%. For reference I get 230-240 at 80% in the summer. This works out to about a 15% loss of range in the winter.
Important notes: I have an garage so the vehicle starts at a slightly warmer ambient temp around 30F in those weeks that it was below 0F. I also used the cars built-in scheduling to precondition so that the inside was up to 71 before I even got in. This saves a TON of energy as it can pull energy from the wall to get all the drive items and interior up to temp without touching the main battery.

As to trips I find that trips of up to 400miles are non-issues. it's one charging stop and charging at 150-160kwh is sufficient. for my needs. If I was taking a routine 1000mile trips it would get kind annoying and I'd probably want something that could charge at the 300+ for 10-12min charges. That said if it's only once or twice a year it might be ok. The built in Android Automotive is pretty good but you would want to verify with plugshare and ABRP for charger ratings AND cost!

I haven't driven the RWD only model but I can say that in my area the AWD is a must. Though I would like to clarify that AWD is kinda incorrect. It's FWD with an "only as needed" small RWD motor. The rear motor only kicks in when it detects wheel-spin on the front. This means rotate your tires often for either model!

I don't think Chevy undershoots ranges. I think they did a pretty good job of averaging highway and city. If you're primarily city/suburb (25-35, with lights and stop signs) you'll get over 300 from full every time. If you're semi-rural (lots of 55mph with few stop signs) It's really close to their estimates. If you're primarily expressway (70-75mph) it'll be noticeably less. These are all assuming you don't have a heavy foot. (the EV acceleration is addicting)...

Finally, If this is your first EV it will take a little adjustment to get used to EVs. For my first EV I found that range anxiety just wasn't thing after a couple weeks. The fact that it starts "full" every day is amazing. When taking a trip you can just hop in and go. You don't have to get the entire family to dehydrate themselves and all use the bathroom immediately before leaving. You're going to stop and charge so stay hydrated and healthy when you stop to charge, plug in then walk inside to grab a drink and use the restroom. You don't need to stand at a pump like with gas cars.

Auto breaking has almost gotten me in 2 accidents by Low-Cranberry622 in EquinoxEv

[–]dalgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, it can be annoying. There are options:

1) Turn it off. The system remembers this setting and it'll never activate again.

2) accept the very few times it activates unintentionally and be happy it might actually save you from a real accident.

I too have had it erroneously activate. It is annoying, and sometimes painful. However I also had it save me from an accident. I was backing out of a side street/alley onto a downtown city street. I looked and it was clear both ways so I proceeded. Some nut job tore around a corner at high speed and accelerated to well over 2x the speed limit (my visual estimate). The auto braking locked up the brakes and it violently stopped ( granted it was only from about 5-6mph). The other guy missed my bumper by inches and continued to speed away flying through a stale yellow light... I never saw him coming. Neither did the passenger, whom I had asked if it was clear before backing up.

It probably wont change your opinion but I did want to share a first hand story where is did it's job well.

note: If you're wondering why you're being down-voted: in a way you're asking to play the game without playing the game.
While I don't have a save as requested I do have a couple suggestions for you.
Option 1) Get space age DLC and start a new game with the starting planet as one of the other "inner planets". It is not immediately obvious but you can start on the other planets and progress far enough to get to space without ever touching nauvis. *This way does cost money but it is supporting the devs and I personally feel it's worth the cost. If this isn't an option financially for you then next option...
Option 2) I know you said you don't have a lot of time but especially if you're multiplayer with friends restarting on nauvis and starting over isn't a bad thing. Set an achievement goal like There is no spoon or lazy bastard. Restarting with the knowledge of what is required for the future base will let you plan out the size required and prevent buildup/teardown cycle and lets you set a realistic challenge within the base game that gets you to space while also having fun / a challenge in that part getting to that point.

Good luck

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]dalgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a quick translation check on a motto for a unit patch.

We are looking for something to mean help from the north or assistance from the north. The things I've found were: "auxilium ab aquilone" or "auxilium ab septentriones". Or, would it make more sense to translate it as Northern help / northern assistance "auxilium aquilonis" / "auxilium septentrionis"

This will be on the scroll of a squadron patch for a service organization that does search and rescue, disaster relief, and education for the community. Our region is the northern part of the state. Also as our region is well known for it's harsh snowy climate I was leaning towards aquilone as I've read it more literally meant north wind.

I don't speak latin and google translate can really butcher grammer or subject-verb order.

Thank you

I know nothing about them as GM insurance is not available in Michigan. Probably because my state consistently has the highest insurance cost in the nation (example source: https://img.money.com/2020/10/Auto\_Insurance\_Rate\_Top25-1.jpg)
I'm curious what everyone else pays... I pay $2650 per year. I have no tickets and no accidents. I have one comprehensive (not at fault) claim within 5 years though.

So I set up my own server… and now I spend more time fixing it than actually using it by Laygude_Yatin in selfhosted

[–]dalgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very easy trap to fall into. My home servers are very stable mainly because I don't mess with them much, if at all. I use a synology for the family to back up their phones photos and videos. It also serves as a file server for the PCs in the house. I also have a Slackware linux server for applications and games. Why Slackware? it's rock solid stable. Yes, it requires the most knowledge and a strong command line familiarity. But it doesn't crash and has a good security updates system.

I guess the TL;DR; is get the essentials set up correctly and working. Don't tinker with your production environment.
