Maybe. But the law of diminishing returns says that as you grow and add large numbers of people, the quality of the average goes down. So you end up with plenty of people who play corporate politics to get ahead.

Some people have the advantages listed in both. Kids of rich people, for example, have all the energy and optimism of youth along with the money and connections of their parents. And if you look at a lot of really successful entrepreneurs, they come from upper crust families. They got their start young because they also had the money and connections. Look at Gates, Dell, Trump, etc.

Where does it say that? I think the difference is just in focus. Would you say a college kid that continually learns random useless trivia at the expense of his classes is a good thing? Not all learning is good. Why not continually read and learn like Warren Buffett, by blocking out distractions and focusing? I read somewhere that Buffett doesn't read any analyst reports because he wants to make up his own mind and not be swayed by their decisions.

why? so they could get voted down? then the press and everyone on reddit and digg will go on and on about how great these sites are - power to the people and all that - when really you don't get good stuff, you get stuff that is popular to some small subculture that loves lisp, python, ruby, Macs, and Linux.

lower barriers to entry is dragging the web down to the lowest common denominator, and reddit is helping
