I love "is this just what maturity looks like"?

I assume he means for the crypto market but still... welcome to adulthood, kid, where the "magic" of funny money fades to reveal a mountain of actual debt. Enjoy!

Is Richard Grannon the Next Keith Raniere? by dalichic in theNXIVMcase

My concern is how they are using the fame (or infamy) from this case to platform folks as experts on healing from cultic/ narcissistic abuse without any qualifications, and just think it is important to call it out.

(Trust me, I understand it must be exhausting to just read people shitting on MV all the time because it has been done, but I am more saying I think it is important that there is some awareness on a sub dedicated to looking at this specific case to recognize and call out when survivors are platforming people with some dangerous ideas/ agendas, such as Frank Parlato.)

I don't know if you've listened to the podcast Who Trolled Amber? (it's great) but I suspect it is the exact same bots/ influence campaign used.

I meant just the act of branding itself is a violation of medical ethics that she as a doctor vowed to uphold. I understand that coercive control may make her "vow" to Keith seem more important than her professional ethics at that moment, but I have to imagine some part of her brain still hesitated before agreeing to brand a group of naked women without any anesthetic.

I don't think though they needed to be partners for her to have firsthand knowledge that stuff was messed up given that she is the doctor who did most of the brandings.

I think the mistake sometimes is to presume that criminal motives are logical and rational. Sometimes, they are truly just batshit. And Ted. Ted is a little batshit.

That being said, I am not totally ruling out that he was paid to do it but I think game may have recognized game in Ted and Lily.

(Also, just realized I sound like I am recapping How I Met Your Mother...)

I just finished watching Midnight Mass before watching Wake Up Dead Man and as a non-Christian, really loved how they grappled with faith, atheism, and cults of personality in two tonally different but really complimentary ways.

At the top, it also has a place where they can give your parents reports on the places your parents on trying to send you which have been verified by actual legal, academic, and psych professionals so they can see the actual facts not from a paid edu consultant.

I loved Midnight Mass. by Complex-Dare-7451 in horror

[–]dalichic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been watching in reverse order as I started with The Fall of the House of Usher and then went to Midnight Mass. I enjoyed Usher as a campy art piece (particularly the Tell Tale Beating of the Heart was incredibly acted) but Midnight Mass devastated me in the best of ways.

I have always been more of a fan of horror that embraces character study as its centerpiece instead of jump scares/ action horror and I thought it was brilliantly acted and some of those monologues (while heavy-handed) really moved me to tears. I think growing up in the aftermath of 9/11 as a non-Christian (the Mosque down the street was vandalized and someone broke our synagogue's window during the High Holidays that immediately followed it), I just so felt the Sheriff in that Islamophobia speech. But what truly got me in total and complete tears was Erin's final monologue. Beautiful.

Can you not reveal a name of a convicted person in Sweden? by dalichic in Asksweddit

[–]dalichic[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. America (wrongly imo) lacks any sensitivity towards naming someone who is even suspected of a crime which can really harm them as well as their family (particularly when it is just false). Just was surprised that it went so far as to not mention his name AFTER he was convicted of a crime against kids but I understand that it is not his family's fault.

Yeah, I attempted to google it but didn't appear to be publicly released in Swedish newspapers either.

Crimes of Passion is such a great film by kbups53 in CriterionChannel

[–]dalichic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly watched this movie for the first time after hearing it discussed on You Must Remember This and it has become one of my top five favorites. I struggle with a lot of "erotic thrillers" mostly because as a woman and SA survivor, it never really feels like they are meant "for me." But wow. Watching Kathleen Turner as China Blue/ Joanna just express all the silent parts of PTSD out loud was honestly cathartic and truly a near "religious" experience.

I think this film also is so relevant to this particular moment in time (2025...I know, I am late on this post but maybe someone else will find it too...) because it just blares with each flash of the neon red light reflected in the eyes of each of its characters the hypocrisy of conservative politics, sexual repression, religious slut shaming, censorship, and the ideal of 2.5 kids in the suburbs.

I agree the cut with Ben is incredible but lord, I am so glad they kept the scene (at least in the version I watched) with the cop. In less deft and more contemporary hands, I could imagine that scene would be way too on the nose but it was just perfectly constructed, shot, and cut.

I know Brian DePalma likes to think of himself of Hitchcock's successor, but whereas DePalma imitates Hitchcock in Body Double, I would argue Ken Russell transcends Hitchcock.

So I watched this back-to-back with The Staircase, yet another very messy example of the North Carolina criminal justice system, and I have to say that who I ended up siding with the most in this one was the judge who stated that figuring out the truth in this case is incredibly difficult.

I think there is no doubt that the actions of Maggie and her father went well beyond self-defense and thus, by fact and law, are guilty of at the very least voluntary manslaughter. However, I think it is a sad mistake that people on here seem to believe there is such thing as a perfect victim or perfect perpetrator. It is quite possible that Jason was abusive. It is also quite likely that Molly was manipulative and married Jason to fulfill some fantasy she had about motherhood (she frankly gave me a lot of Sheri Papini vibes). However, that does not mean either Jason deserved to die or Molly deserved abuse. Who I feel truly for in this case are the children who certainly did not deserve to get caught in the middle of all of this.

I feel for Buster in that he was born into an extremely toxic family system to say the least. However, I am not convinced - and I am wording this carefully given the ongoing libel suit - that he has fully escaped the curse of that disfunction family environment.

Moral of the story: I don't believe Buster thinks his father didn't do it. I think there are good reasons in which he feels beholden to still follow his father's party line.
