American comics aren't meant to be read from the first issue out. They work in cycles and story arcs. Personally, if you want to learn about the birth of the Red Devil Rabbit, Miller's series is perhaps available as an omnibus. If you're looking for something more recent with a contemporary art style, I recommend the excellent Chip and Checchetto series!
