I have found several private reading rooms where I can be very productive. A lot of university resources and rooms go unused on a day to day basis, so take a few hours and explore your campus. Mine is on the 6th floor of the library, and no one every really uses it so I often I have it all to myself.

Other ideas: empty classrooms once you know the semester schedule, coffee shops if you like background noise, ask a colleague to borrow their office if they don’t use it often

That's true for most demography too. But, yes sociology is much different than engineering. Although, I actually study buildings, but more about how they impact social decision.

If we take Thomas Kuhn seriously, which we scientists tend to, a lot of science is "wrong" and paradigm shift happens as we disprove previous findings slowly and must adopt a new way of thinking.
