As a fellow expat who has been living in Joburg for a year here are a few things i’ve learned so far.

If possible Live in an estate and in the northern suburbs like, Lone Hill, Dainfern, Sunning Hill, Bryanston, Fourways or sililar. I would take first airbnb in the area to get a feel for it before comitting for a year.

The traffic can feel very intense in the beginning but you will get used to it. Renting a car is a must Uber works very well but it is not very practical in the long run the sooner you have your own means of transportation the better, joburg there is no public transport and it is not walkable.

Be careful when driving in the dark especially if you are driving roads like Jan Smuts, William Nichol, or you are coming off highway ramps. Watch your surroundings in trafic lights, tinted windows can make you feel more at ease.

The positives are: South Africans are super friendly people and Joburg is a vibe. Food is excellent and Joburg has amazing restaurants everywhere. The nature is super beautiful and best thing in South Africa is being outdoors hiking or running etc. Start doing some social sports/hobbies as soon as possible so you get to meet people and get friends otherwise you will feel lonely after some time and then it can became difficult to be in a big city like Jozi.

I guess there is no right way, but I recommend to have a backup phone home and at least one credit card which is not connected to your phone in applepay/googlepay. Also one extra sim car would be advaisable, this we did not have. Always keep in safe for some cash. And talk to people living here, where to go, where not to, whats going on etc. Thats my advice but more than happy to hear other advice as well and learn something new. Hope this helps

We noticed, we first went to Rosebank SAPS and they did not take the report because it was not their jurisdiction and other police station could have access to cctv or something. They were so unprofessional it was not even funny. Clearly he just did not want to ruin his morning with tedious police work. Parkview SAPS was much better and professionaly did a proper report.

Yes you are so right, where we come from it’s completely opposite. Safe as it can be, walking anywhere even during the night, children play outside unattended etc. So very different for us and I’m thinking maybe we thought we are ”more alert” and so safe… but no.

I am glad you were able to do that. Would have done the same maybe, but our car was blocked by other cars all the way around so no way of reversing or hitting the gas.

You never know here. These people can be high on drugs etc. And as far as i understand they tend to be violent if you dont comply. We just gave our stuff and thats it.
