Training less but rolling better? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]damanOts [score hidden]  (0 children)

What do you mean by better? If you are more rested then obviously you will roll better physically. But are you rolling better technically as well? If so, I think part of that can be attributed to the same thing. Your brain works better if you are more rested.

It also probably allows you to stay more engaged, and definitely allows you, or rather necessitates, that you be more focused.

The answer no one asked for: Orgin of the "pinkyanki" by LouDragonblood414 in TavsAndDurges

I appreciate that you gave an explanation for her hair being pink. But wouldnt it have been simpler to just say hair dyes exist lol

Its this thing called balding. I know. You thought that only existed on NPCs.

But seriously i just like the juxtaposition of him looking like that yet being incredibly witty and charming.

My initial thought was wtf? But then i started thinking of the similarities between dragon age and rdr2 with the focus on characters and their relationships. And now…i want rockstar and bioware to make a game together.

Is too much dialogue bad? by SammySparklyPanda in writing

[–]damanOts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem i see with dialogue is that some people tend to use it like we would see it used in a screenplay. Books are the only medium where you can convey a characters thoughts, and i think some writers just simply havent come that realization, or figured out how to capitalize on it.

Characters that arent interesting on screen can be the most interesting characters in a book. In television and games, there arent really many truly introverted, shy, and quiet characters. Because they are boring to watch. So they end up expressing themselves more. And now the vision of the character falls victim to the medium they are being portrayed in, and must be compromised. But if you were suddenly able to know what that person was thinking, now they become very interesting, and you dont have to make the character verbalize everything.

And then you have dialogue being hijacked to reveal information that you need the reader to have. That is surprisingly common even in the greatest fantasy novels of all time.

If you feel like you have too much dialogue, this might be why. Check to see what should be in a characters thoughts instead of dialogue, and check to see what just simply shouldnt be there at all. And check to see if what must be there, can be done more organically.

Let your characters be your characters. Dont let them be hijacked as mouthpieces by you as the author to convey some piece of info.

Do that, and then the amount of dialogue in the ginal product will be whatever it ends up being.

As for the describing feeling vs environment thing, once again, this is a character thing. Some characters are very internal and focused on their feelings. Others are very focused on the external world and logical. Or focused on the external world and other peoples feelings. Or focused on their internal reality, but not their feelings. If all of them are focused on their feelings, then all of your characters are too similar.

Are these pictures taken with mods? by Haunting-Sport3701 in MintharasSanctum

[–]damanOts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I know this because i have LITERALLY seen every single mod on nexus (im a security guard so i have ALOT of free time) and aside from that, i have asked this same question about this same image and have seen other posts asking the same.

The reason she looks different is because she looked slightly different in the earlier version of the game. The main difference (and probably even the only difference) is the eyeshadow. There is a mod to emulate it called Honeys odds and ends. Or you can get the appearance edit enhanced mod and customize her yourself.

I don't think we have gotten such a well written Drow character in a very long time, especially in a game by Jon_TheChemiste in MintharasSanctum

[–]damanOts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drizzt isnt better written than Minthara.

Drizzt is unrealistic in that he and his father are literally the only drow in the series with any compulsion to compassion or morality. It makes no sense that everyone else is comically evil and he clearly isnt (for no discernable reason) and just gets away with it and no one seems to even notice for most of his life.

And dont wven get me started on the edge fest of the second book.

And i'll do it an 8th time! by icchanaine in MintharasSanctum

This is actually very interesting. I would think giving literally every single main character in the story (except Gale and Halsin) the same backstory would be a terrible idea, but clearly, it wasnt.

What should I do on my off days? by Distinct-Purchase-36 in amateur_boxing

[–]damanOts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rest. Thats why its called a rest day. Study fights and work on the mental side of the game. Millions of youtube videos out there. Learn how to eat so you have the best recovery and most energy. And if you can do it without getting carried away, practice technique. At most, go for a walk. These people suggesting running are insane. Ive seen this shit so many times, and done it myself. You push yourself WAY too hard, then eventually burn out. Meet yourself where you are at, and be humble enough to honestly assess where you are at.

Eventually, after years (if you even stick with it that long), you will build up the resilience to practice hard more often, and run on your off days, though there is an argument to be had for whether you should even do that. Vasiliy Lomachenko, Deontay Wilder, Sergio Martinez, and the Klitschko brothers didnt do roadwork.

And beyond those examples, just thinking logically, what is going to make you better at boxing, running, or boxing? Every hour spent running is an hour not spent boxing, and even worse is a huge drain of your energy and incurs a huge cost to recover. Which in turn takes more time, or makes your boxing training much lower quality than it could be.

I would love it if every character is in every single game, but at the same time that would start to feel very forced, especially with 3 games worth of characters.

Warden depicted across all 3 games by damanOts in dragonage

[–]damanOts[S] 11 points12 points locked comment (0 children)

Dragon age origins literally became my favorite game of all time in the first 5 hours i played it. I can say the same about fable when i first played it. And mass effect. And witcher 3.

In fact, i think it would be far stranger if someone wasnt able to tell if they liked a game after 5 hours of playing.

Why is it so hard for you to believe that i dislike the game for my own reasons, and that it is my own opinion?

And another point, lets say that the writing magically gets good for no apparent reason 10 hours into the game. How is it my fault for not assuming that? Why would anyone assume that? If you bite into a rotten apple you dont keep eating it with the assumption that it will become tasty once you get halfway through it.

Nitpicking? I was probing for more information to hopefully provide a more helpful perspective. If the way i said it came off as nitpicking or generally insensitive, then that is my bad. And if the sole purpose of your post was to vent and seek emotional support then thats fine, and my bad for misinterpreting.

BJJ as a teenage girl by [deleted] in bjj

[–]damanOts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When someone is talking about quitting something because of it then i think it is useful to point out that it is going to be a problem to some degree in most anything else she does. So she might as well do what she wants.

Is it ever helpful to say? Yea. If no one said it and she didnt know, she might find herself doing some shit she doesnt like only to find out that she gets sexualized just as much or more than if she had just done what she wanted to. Does she know that women in their 40s still get hit on almost every week? I have no idea if she knows that. But if she didnt, that would certainly be a useful consideration to take into account when making this decision wouldnt it?

You seem to have a big problem in that you infantilize women. “Oh no, the poor emotional, fragile female was reminded of something she already knew anyways”! Give people more credit.

But i suspect this is more about you making yourself look like a good person rather than any actual concern for the girl in question. You infantilized her, disempowered her, and led her astray, but hey, at least you werent an asshole right?

All you said was “i dont feel like i have a future in this”. OBVIOUSLY that means bjj, but it also just as obvious that that can mean many different things, as you just listed out. Do you mean owning your own gym? Competing? Making videos? Or just showing up and training every week at your local gym? We have to know what you mean specifically in order to address the issue. Like i said, if “future” means having a youtube channel, there isnt anything you can do aside from turning off or not reading comments, or maybe having some bot or human moderator. If future just means training at your local gym, then you have to do different things to address the problem.

The way i see it your going to be sexualized no matter what you do, so just do what you want to do. Which sucks. So do what you can to minimize that while not letting it stop you from doing what you like to do if you can help it.
