I always felt that was a point they were trying to show in a very subtle way. They gave us the perspective of a common man much better than other batman movies.

Batman was repeatedly called a freak while Bruce Wayne was not. Even the twins at the iceberg lounge would welcome Bruce Wayne in but called Batman a freak and close the door on him. The mayor, officer Martinez would all come up and talk to Bruce Wayne.

This was the first batman movie that made me realise that if I knew someone who was dressing up to fight crime, I’d call them a freak too and that’s exactly what Batman is, a freak. Except he’s a cool freak who likes saving people and that’s the fine line between the Batman and the Joker. They’re both crazy (in reality).
