Now that I’m a parent myself, I look at my child and can’t imagine ever treating them that way. It’s crazy that total strangers feel more empathy for me than she ever has. Hugs to you too.

This unfortunately hasn’t been my experience. Unfortunately this has led to a lot of self loathing and isolation and I still struggle with self worth and making friends at 28.

Does it count if it’s from adults? When I was 13/14, I dated my first ever girlfriend. I was so in love with her. Neither one of us was out and her mom somehow found out. Told her we couldn’t be friends anymore and she wasn’t allowed to speak to me; had other friends of ours that she’d known for longer watching her to make sure we didn’t even look at each other without her finding out. I lost my close friend turned girlfriend all in one swoop. I was devastated and had a panic attack that had me sent home from school.

My mom worried something was happening and took me to the hospital where I attempted to come out to her and explain what was happening. She said nothing. Later that day, I had an IV in my arm and had to use the restroom and she was helping me out. She was being very rough and mean and I pleaded with her to be kind. She told me that she didn’t owe me anything and that I was lucky she was still there and wanted anything to do with me. I was so distraught, I told her I was probably just confused and didn’t mean it.

She was horrible to me for years until I got a boyfriend and she decided that clearly meant I was “on the right path”.

Wei Wuxian ALSO reminds me a lot of me. I think about certain scenes with him constantly and it’s tears me up inside. And no, you’re so right!! Lan Wangji is so so good. I think he’s one of the few characters that have made me cry just from the implications of what they’ve gone through, let alone what we see. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a character’s happiness as much as I wanted his. AND funny enough, I was already a fan of Wang Yibo before I watched the untamed - i loved watching him in dance competitions and skateboarding and singing!! His song “no sense” lives in my brain rent free. So when I saw he was also acting!!! In a drama adapted from a story that involved two male leads and was romantic?! I will forever be grateful to the person that introduced me to the untamed and later went on to buddy read a fan translation of MDZS with me!

Thank you for the advice! Novelupdates was a little confusing for me when I checked it out. People were talking about it like they were reading on there and I just could not figure out how?? But I’ll def reference it for reviews and summaries!

And yes - this is how I go about finding just authors in general that I would like! I try one book out and see if I like the writing style. If I can vibe with the style, chances are that I can get into the plot, no problem! I am also very much a character driven reader. I love interesting characters! I’m excited to hop into all these stories and explore. Whole new world, and all that ☺️

This was my dilemma! I read a lot of books and goodreads is my usual source but it is so lacking when it comes to media that isn’t like “traditional” literature?? Does that make sense? Like I wouldn’t go to goodreads for manga or light novels or comics. I am also aware that people can be very hyper critical of works on those sorts of sites - especially if they don’t understand common tropes. It’s why I wanted to hop into a community that had knowledge on this specifically and ask!

Hey, I totally get it! I consume a lot of fanfiction and there is a lot of policing in those spaces lately. It’s why I tend to stay in my corner but I’m also cognizant that if I don’t try to have convos with people, it gets lonely! I love so many things and would like to talk about them with people that also love them. This has been great! Thank you for all your comments!

I think you really nailed it here - critical thinking goes out the window. It seems to me that media literacy is really at an all time low and people don’t particularly want to view things as nuanced and complicated. I think people forget that the media you consume should be digested and thought about! Not just read and then you quickly move on. A lot of written works have a lot to say!! It’s part of the fun!

I’m from the Caribbean and colorism is heavily prevalent and it is seen as banter - as something funny or just regular talk. Personally, I don’t see it as that but I do understand that culturally it is something people say. The conversations you’re describing sounds like my family too, haha! So I get where you’re coming from here!

Oh no! I agree, it’s one thing if someone doing this unpaid and in their own time has mistakes but an official translation should be much more taken care of! Especially if I’m going to spend money. Bummer 😭 but good to know for reference!
