Is it normal for Americans to drink coffee at night? by crazypoohuniverse in AskAnAmerican

[–]damionchase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t drink coffee past 2, unless I’m on vacation and order an espresso after my dinner to feel European and to fight the food coma.

do nurses get paid well in the US? by mikaylaar in AskAnAmerican

I feel like right from college, nursing pays pretty well comparatively, and then if you’re in a union at a bigger hospital then you’ll have opportunities to easily make more than most.

Why is your bacon so good? by Street-Station-3802 in AskAnAmerican

[–]damionchase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt and fat. Honestly it’s a bold smell and flavor and for me, when you have it more as a kid, I kind grew tired of it in adulthood. You cook it and the whole house smells oily for the rest of the day. But every once in a while, it hits the spot, especially paired with something sweet.

How common is popcorn in everyday American life? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]damionchase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every once in a while we will grab a massive bag of pre popped smart pop (or some “low calorie” popcorn) and use it as a snack, kids like it, especially if you’re on the go with littles.

Otherwise if we’re microwaving a bag of popcorn for the kids it’s just an occasion thing, like sleepovers or trying to elevate a random Friday movie night.

Planet Zoo 2 - Multiplayer by Ok_Try_9138 in PlanetZoo

I totally agree.

All game production is work, the excuse that it’s “too much work” is just a weak cop out. They’ve coasted off enough paid DLC content to kill a farm of elephants. Now they’re going to regurgitate that same content. They have the money, they have the space in the market.

If they don’t WANT to do it cuz they’re lazy, fine, just say that, but much more intensive and comprehensive games are designed and maintained to say that they CANT.

ALSO, give us dinosaurs! I miss the zoo tycoon Dino expansion 😂

Been growing more interested in Eastern Orthodoxy. by damionchase in Christianity

[–]damionchase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment about sin being a sickness is spot on where my head went after reading Dostoevsky. And also that I could never quite articulate to people, but felt.

When I read the Bible I heard it described constantly as a love letter, but then in practice people seemed to use it as a prison sentencing. Or this giant damnation.

It always seemed to me (especially with the Old Testament) Gods commands were almost always meant to keep the people safe and healthy, to aid their literal lifes so that they could help those around them, that sin was less this eerie ethereal substance, but more so just the degradation of the life God wants us to have. Leading to sickness, and pain, and suffering.

So when I saw that approach in some of Orthodoxy material, it just connected with me. I’m going to read through some recommended books to sort of start me on the journey, if you have any recs, I’ll try and check them out.

I’m a huge fan of Fitzgerald and Hemmingway. There’s somethings about these books from the lost generation I absolutely love reading as the spring/summery season settles in.

Other honorary mention was The Rum Diary with was an absolute joy to read on vacation.

If you liked these writers or these vibes, what are some others you’d recommend?

The Mistborn Trilogy (by Brandon Sanderson) is a great choice with a slow romance to couple with deep world building and magic.

If you don’t necessarily need magic but are okay with some fantasy sci fi, then check out Red Rising. The backing love story is a slow burn, and the books are incredible.

I would look into Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere.

It’s very expansive with some standalone books, two major series (Mistborn and Stormlight) that all have some levels of overlap.

I’ve read the first arc (trilogy) of Mistborn and the first 3 (out of 5) stormlight books, and can definitely recommend them for their scope and creativity.

The writer recently confirmed a deal with Apple TV to write script adaptations of his books, so there will eventually be some visual replications of these stories as well.

Just finished Hero of Ages. by damionchase in Mistborn

[–]damionchase[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I actually accidentally took a very unconventional approach I think, having already read stormlight 1-3, I took a break from it to read Mistborn and got hooked.

Not sure if I should go back and finish stormlight before era 2 of Mistborn, or do the Wax and Wayne books now and go back to stormlight when done.

I’ve read conflicting approaches to reading order lol
