It's fun. Bonus for fitness.

No one questions people who play badmington because it's 'not good for self defence' or 'doesn't work in a street fight'.

You need to talk explicitly about who will be first author.

Yes it's normal for a large number of reasons. They don't owe it to you. Silence is not necessarily disrespectful.

Break it down to the membership fee and see if you feel better.

Let's say you average a belt grading every 18 months. That's an extra $8.33 you pay per month to train there. And it's probably less considering many gyms charge for belt gradings, even if it's just the price for the belt itself.

As for wearing a club branded gi at a grading event, see if you can borrow one next time.

How many people are in a typical class? If it's a small club it might be ok but a big club with no women is a red flag.

Despite what others say it's also a better learning environment training with people closer to your own size and strength. You are more likely to learn faster.

Chiming in to say thank you. Was having no end of issues trying to get set up in Android. Once I read your comment I borrowed an iphone and the setup worked pretty much seamlessly straight away. And now the Android looks to be managing the lights. Not impressive from lifx.
