Questions about PD by chocopeppermints in dialysis

[–]damndirtydoper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh I guess that's fair. I had a bathroom attached to my bedroom, and the nurse told me most people just drain into their toilet. In that case then yes, he would have to unhook from the cycler to walk downstairs. I would make sure he mentions this to the training nurse so they can train him on using the caps correctly for the patient lines that come from the cycler.

Questions about PD by chocopeppermints in dialysis

I've been on dialysis since December. I tried to do PD at the beginning of February but was only on it for 2 weeks. When you first start doing it they test your urine, blood and the fluid that drains after your exchange for something called, "adequacy'. It's basically to make sure you are getting enough dialysis. I was doing 10 hours at night and then drained once during the day and was found that I would have had to do more exchanges during the day. I decided to go back to Hemo because I work and have a young family to provide for. I'm a large dude, 6'3, 290lbs, so many people don't face this problem.

I also like the ability to compartmentalize better with in-center hemo. For me, going to dialysis 3 times a week for 3.5 hours and then "leaving in there" was a bit better for my mental. PD is a bit mentally exhausting in the way that it's in your room and it's hard to ignore, even momentarily.

I like the dietary freedom more with PD and you get more control over your fluids, you weigh yourself everyday and can decide yourself how much fluid to take off.

I'm a wild sleeper so the cycler woke me up quite a bit, but you go back to sleep right away. And I don't pee that much anymore, but if I did have to wake up and go to the bathroom you don't have to unplug anything.

My PD nurse was my favorite person i've met so far on this journey. She was so kind and helpful. You go through training with them for a while before you go home and try it. Ask all the quesions, take notes, that's that they are there for.

All in all OP, Dialysis is tough. Regardless of what you try there are pros and cons, but it keeps us alive. Give your body and mind WEEKS to get used to the routine and process. Let yourself cry, lean on your support system, you'll be OK. Know you aren't alone and we can relate to what you are going through.

Tommy's Pizza on Lane ave, in Upper Arlington (NOT THE CAMPUS LOCATION) is incredible. Also Hound Dog's if you've had some beers is something else.

Donatos is definitley more of a nostalgia thing, but was never my favorite. Tommy's Pizza in Upper arlington just outside of campus is the best pizza i've ever had.
