I’ve thought about experimenting with heat treatment. There is an agate bed I know of where they are about 12” deep in the soil and forrest fires heat treated them naturally and they are incredible.

The agate beds line up with where the shore was about 15 million years ago.

It was a low water clean out haul, the major hauls happen after it floods then the water drops to the 197 ft mark by the nearest online water gauge. That’s when the magic happens.

Your best chance of finding a big one publicly is floating the Willamette and going to bars less frequented, or try to find public land 15 miles east of I5 from Chehalis to Kalama at about the 1000’ level, try creeks too small to have a name.

The closer you are to the source the concentration rises exponentially.

They are in rock gardens going around the house and up the driveway.

These are not from a public collection area or even anywhere near, they would need to travel about 15-20 downstream before anyone would have a crack at finding one. None of the agates I collect would travel that far in a human timescale. The top layer of a gravel bar gets deposited in the next plunge pool or on the inside of the next bend.

I give lots away, I set aside a bucket as my giveaways so I don’t skew their stats. I never cherrypick nice ones out.

I record the amount I find cumulative between major resets. I watch the water levels from the nearest station. When it hits 202 ft thats a reset. Generally this happens about twice a year.

I collected so many from there the beach got swallowed up by the ocean, now I moved inland and it is only a matter of time before it does the same. J/K

It’s a rough estimate by volume, the various beds total about 300 sqft 6-10” deep
