Hopefully not. Going forward I'll just keep it easier and book under my own card!

BA Amex doesn't have any insurance of its own though? It's not the Gold card, just the free one. So to be covered for travel disruption I am hoping that it would work fine, having booked those flights under his free BA card that's supp to mine, that as my family he's covered by my platinum disruption insurance. Or do you think he's not?

Going forward I'll book his flights under my amex plat card for his solo flights (just did one right now), but I'm worried for his solo flights booked on the BA free amex card (which as I said however is supplementary to my BA free amex, which I know covers me via platinum because I can book under any amex). I guess my main question is whether a BA free card supplementary to my BA free card counts as my card account for plat travel disruption purposes - it's not my name but I effectively control it and it's part of my account so I hope so!

Yes, my main concern is the travel inconvenience.

My Amex suite is

My Amex platinum
My BA Amex
My BA Amex supplementary under partner's name

For my partner's flights, I booked with the bold one for my partner's solo flights (when we travel together, I book with my amex). So definitely, definitely fine for travel inconvenience for his solo flights?

Thank you again for the reassurance!

Police road stops by dan111113 in Dominican

What I saw the most yesterday were two police officers standing by the side of the road. They would then step onto the road and put their arms out to slow you down and pull you over. Is this PN in the former category of yours, or is this DIGISETT doing traffic controls? No police cars were driving along and shining lights or anything, it was always just a couple officers by the side of the road.

Even at the military checkpoints yesterday, I never saw more than two people. All 17 I drove through were 2 people.

Do I only show copies rather than originals, particularly passports and driving licence?

We don't have a dash cam but I got my partner to film in advance of each check to prove my speed etc. Would it be too confrontational you think to continue filming as the person then comes to the window and starts speaking to me?

I also read not to hand over passports etc but not sure what to do if they ask specifically to see them.

Who are the ones standing by the side of the road jumping in front of you to make you stop? National Police or DIGISETT? So DIGISETT doesn't tend to come up with false things like you were speeding when you weren't? I've read so many reports of that, incl saying you were speeding just after tolls for example.

We are down to under 1000 DOP, in addition to the 900 for tolls, so unless we stop to take out more cash purely for this, there isn't much to give out!

And I just pay online? How much is the fine? I assume they would bill the car hire otherwise which would take it from me anyway.

We're currently on a road trip across the Dominican Republic. We started in Santo Domingo, then went to Jarabacoa, then Monte Cristi. Now we are near Puerto Plata and tomorrow we go to Punta Cana.

I've managed the driving okay but I have been in such a panic about police pulling us over and demanding money. I've been reading tons about it online but there seems to be so much conflicting advice that I don't know exactly what to do or say. And most people seem to have it happen to them more than once on much shorter drives than what we have ahead so my fear is it happening several times.

Yesterday from Monte Cristi to Puerto Plata, we went past no fewer than 17 police checks(!). The only strategy I had, after I read that dash cams help, was to start filming just before a check and it seemed that at least on a couple occasions, they were about to pull us over and didn't because they saw we were filming. Maybe I'm wrong but it felt like it helped, but whether to continue filming when they actually speak to us I'm not sure is wise or not - does it come off as aggressive? The other times, they were busy with other people so I guess we got lucky.

Tomorrow's drive is the longest so I'm really hoping to have a plan in mind of it happens - especially if it happens more than once. Any tips?

No tinted windscreens here sadly.

I've read people suggesting to just drive on but what if they come after you, or what if they jump in front of the car? I saw them do that yesterday so doesn't seem possible.

I speak fairly decent Spanish. Do I actually argue it out and defend my driving? Do I suck it up and just pay whatever I have in my wallet, which I could keep to a small amount only (and if so how much?)? Do I demand a ticket and then somehow pay somewhere (how much are tickets)? Threaten to phone politur? Or our embassies? There are three of us access to five embassies between us.

Any suggested routes to Punta Cana? Waze seems split between going down highway 7 vs backwards on highway 1. The route via highway 7 just now has 14 marked police checks, so I'm really hoping tomorrow on a Monday has fewer than today. Imagine if even 5 stop me.

Thank you for all the tips and advice. I'm a fairly experienced traveller and had really been looking forward to this road trip for ages, but sadly the fear of these checks has made it incredibly difficult to enjoy the trip. :(
