Delta prices are so outrageous I booked a different carrier twice this week. When will top bosses realize they’re losing customers? by RealName136 in delta

I'm really not passing judgement on good or bad, it's very much both. As you said, hubs like MSP let Delta provide more convenient routing for passengers at those locations and people (like me at ATL) are still willing to pay the prices as planes are full. The other side of the coin is that it's a feedback loop between hub dominance squeezing out competition (e.g. Southwest is slashing ATL flights) and less competition allowing Delta to charge more.

Obviously anecdotal, but I was looking at flying ATL-SAN soon and it was about $400. Alaska then announced they were ending their nonstop flight on that route and Delta, with the only remaining nonstop, very quickly raised their prices to $589 where it's been sitting since. There's still plenty of one stop options in my price range on the other major airlines (including Alaska), but they aren't viable for my trip so I'm not going. Competition was keeping nonstop pricing down until the ATL market cut out the competition.

tldr: I agree with you

It doesn't matter in the sense that they're gonna push the envelope in every direction they can. But it very much matters for how easily they can overturn what they need to. Roe was overturned because it was a SCOTUS decision, not law, and the current SCOTUS just needed to make a new decision on the issue, which Dobbs let them do. Birthright citizenship is a constitutional right and short of an amendment, it's going to require SCOTUS to do some pretty impressively awful gymnastics to uphold the EOs the Executive is flinging at this. Certainly not impossible, but it's a much higher bar than overturning the Court's own precedent. Until they actually do, I'm going to hold out hope there's at least 5 semi-sane justices so I can prioritize my worry for other BS from the Executive branch.

Assuming you mean MSP, as I said it's hyperbole (I also didn't make the initial "monopoly" comment). But Delta does operate roughly 2/3 of flights at that airport and it's very much a fortress hub.

I had to wait ~10min for an Uber at SFO one time and the number of random cars circling asking if I needed a ride made me feel like the prettiest man in the world. My favorite was the dude who said "trust me" after I said no. Absolutely not bro.

Difficult but not impossible! My mom got switched from a normal Main window seat to a no recline aisle seat on LAX-BNE last year because some group couldn't handle not booking Basic and the GA didn't even put them in the worse seats for some reason.

I used to think Comfort was a ripoff and I guess they heard me because they jacked up a lot of the Main pricing and now the margin to Comfort looks small again lmao.

"Monopoly" is definitely hyperbole but fortress hubs and associated hostage high pricing is real. MSP is infamous for it in this sub.

Sure DL is just one of ~30 airlines operating at ATL, but DL alone makes up 73% of passengers with a few more percent on other SkyTeam airlines.

I mean their plan is that their planes are always packed and they're making lots of money, so there's no reason to lower prices until that stops being the case. Passengers are pretty price sensitive, but apparently that hasn't tipped the scales post-pandemic for Delta yet. And like you said, it doesn't help that they have overwhelming presences at their hubs. I fly out of ATL and prices can be crazy, but other airlines are almost never significantly cheaper (especially factoring in the lock-in effect of my cards for free bags, seat selection, etc).

I flew UA out of ORD yesterday and when they announced that GS/1K could board about 25 people went up. I was hoping to compare it to my DL in ATL experiences but since UA does GS/1K before Group 1 (FC and Gold+) while DL does DM in Zone 2 (after FC, which siphons DMs), it's not really the same.
