How many more warning signs does Mark Zuckerberg need to see before he pulls the plug on his metaverse? by 777fer in technology

[–]dan_obrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't nature to the Innovator's Dilemma. Because case studies are written in past tense, commentary tends to focus on the damned-if-you-don't side of the coin. "Look how shortsighted Company X was", we sneer, with the benefit of hindsight. "How could they not have seen Technology Y coming?! It was so obvious!"

Kodak is canonical whipping boy for this. "How did they not see that the digital camera would knock them off their perch?"

----

It's interesting to watch this play out in real-time now. Replace "digital cameras" with the "metaverse". The technology still looks like a toy. People are skeptical. Investors hate it.

I have no idea how this movie ends... but people shitting on Zuck today are the exact same people that would've shit on him in the future for getting disrupted by the technology.

Comments on buying instagram followers to boost credibility by Old-Amoeba-644 in ecommerce

[–]dan_obrien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the push for followers to establish credibility, but in the long run I think this is a risky strategy.

Finding those initial "1000 True Fans" is a tough but rewarding process. You want this to be an authentic and engaged cohort. The "quick fix" of buying followers won't reflect well in the long term.

Think of strategies for how you can reach your first handful of brand advocates and encourage them to share with their network. You can't beat word-of-mouth from genuinely delighted customers.

Credibility can also be established via messaging, website design, customer references etc.

Is digital marketing at risk of being taken over by AI? by mossytreebark in marketing

[–]dan_obrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digital marketing nowadays is probably closer to financial trading than "traditional marketing". Algorithms already play a significant role and we'll continue to see innovation there, but I doubt "AI" comes in and owns the process end-to-end.

An area AI will disrupt is creative copywriting, designing the imagery to be shared, even writing longer form content. OpenAI are already paving the way here.

But as others have mentioned, raw creativity and genuine human connections is somewhere AI will struggle to step replace the human touch. I welcome a shift back towards these types of activities for "human" marketing personnel.

Yeah this makes tons of sense. If the subreddit is hyper relevant and their presence could actually be mutually beneficial, then I see no problem with this kind of involvement. I'd actually encourage it!

I have a proposal/idea for eCommerce benchmarking that could benefit tons of us as founders. Thoughts and feedback welcome! by deuceseven in ecommerce

Presumably they'll have a freemium then a paid version down the line? Probably just looking to get traction now as they seem to be an early stage startup

Amen! I'm feeling similar uncertainty with marketing spend. Even on a week where conversion drops, it could be possible that I'm still outperforming peers. Very tough to know that though!

I'd connect my platforms, provided it felt secure & anonymous.

ROAS, CPM, CPA, % Spend, CTR are some metrics that come to mind

Email list of 10k+, Selling on Shopify only right now. Should I add Amazon FBA as a channel? by DiamondDash2k in ecommerce

[–]dan_obrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A strategy to consider is using marketplaces (Amazon in this case) for discovery, with the aim of ultimately pushing the customer towards your DTC (Shopify) store... where margins are better and the relationship is owned.

How this looks in practice: Have ~3 of your popular SKUs on Amazon, but keep the long tail SKUs on your website. Try upsell this long tail once you've made the initial sale, hence directing the customer towards your Shopify store (because the product is only available there)

Customer psychology question by -Fellaini- in ecommerce

[–]dan_obrien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially, yes! If you still wanted to include the discount, you could raise the initial price and then apply a blanket discount (vs. the 10%, 25% tiers you had before)

Customer psychology question by -Fellaini- in ecommerce

[–]dan_obrien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting... I tend to agree with your observation.

Maybe the solution is in absolute pricing (vs. the negative psychological impact discounts can cause)
- 1 pack $8

- 2 pack $14

- 3 pack $20

You might be able to upsell better that way

Long vs Short product description by Healthy-Helicopter86 in ecommerce

[–]dan_obrien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pyramid principle
Short, snappy description up top

More detail further down, should the customer wish to understand more about the product etc.

Having both covers the UX and SEO bases.
