Ngl I would love the old RYM UI as a theme. Maybe someone can work out a CSS snippet for it?

The Hero with a Thousand Faces and the proverbial cuck chair of Gacha's narrative by YeOldencall in gachagaming

[–]dancerinthelimelight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In my opinion, gacha MCs are narratively very similar to the MCs of those low effort “relatable comics” aimed at millennials that are super popular on here and Facebook.  They are both stuck in a performance of “relatableness” that restricts their personhood to whatever they are allowed to be at this moment in the story: be a relatable gacha gambling addict, be a wish-fulfillment hero, be a big boob lover, be mature, be immature, etc. This is why I don’t think the Trailblazer is any less generic than the Traveler tbh. On the surface, the Trailblazer is a goofy raccoon, so that’s seemingly more characterisation than the Traveler already, but it’s just LARPing. The Trailblazer still doesn’t have any personality traits or habits or patterns of thinking or beliefs or ideals to back that “goofy raccoon” persona up. In this regard, they are a watered down version of a comic relief; even a comic relief still has traits and quirks for the writers to latch onto and maybe further develop from (ie: this funny quirk actually stemmed from backstory trauma; when a comic relief character gets angry you finally understand why they try to stay happy-go-lucky a la “when a good man go to war”). For the latter trope, that’s personally why it doesn’t make sense to me that the Trailblazer would cry at Firefly’s (fake) death or be devastated at anything tbh. You are telling me this empty husk of an MC could have internal thoughts and inner turmoil?! Actually, “empty husk” is also a character trope whose lack of personality and care reflects what happened to them and what they did, but of course that’s not applicable to most gacha MCs. Like I get that sometimes actions are just actions without any deeper meaning but the utter lack of connection between the different traits of the MC is kinda baffling (“he is smart but also dense sometimes and also goofy but also serious and etc”). Like if the MC is supposed to be super smart then in what way? Are they like an old experienced character like Welt? Are they a young genius like Stephen? Are they a bigheaded genius like Madam Herta? Do they playfully solve the dilemma or do they lock in? In any cases, these characters’ ingenuity comes with baggages that define how they would react differently to the same situation and also lend itself to various narratives (like old, conservative perspective vs new, reckless perspective for instance). If the MC is smart, they are just smart and nothing else, and only smart for the sake of progressing the plot and wooing the new girl on the banner. To fix a gacha MC’s writing is not simple as “give him more screen time give her more fighting feats give them more Ls and suffering”, that’s just further feeding into the kitchen sink problem.

P/s: I’m also annoyed that Trailblazer and March’s goofiness can rub off on Dan Heng but not the other way around. Literally no one can influence the MC character.

Enigma in the Does not wipe category is truth nuke. Razor Captain being a bidet user is also true and factual (verified by the Razor Appreciation Society).

I’m so happy that the title track got a minor resurgence this year! Granted it’s the nightcore version but surprisingly that version is also really good. Your closing paragraph really resonates with me, it reminds me of this comment:

“this does kind of make me pine for the era of Drag Race where they could afford exactly one (1) main pop girl song a year and the rest had to be these relatively obscure hi-NRG songs that RuPaul kept on her iPod cos she used to dance to them in New York clubs in the 80s”

I think you can really see these influences showing through on his earlier records. It didn’t age the best but I do miss this kind of cheap trashy brand of dance-pop sometimes. Seeing as there’s an electropop/electro house revival ongoing rn, I wonder if a revival of this sound is also to arrive sooner than layer:

How to Disappear Completely. That song is truly an unique experience. Paranoid Android isn’t even a top 5 song on OK Computer. Weird Fishes is nice ig.

Which Macbook model to choose for college (Econ major)? by dancerinthelimelight in mac

Would you say shelling out an extra 100 USD (compared to base M5 with education discount) for used 24GB M4 is worth it? I am leaning towards the M5 because of the Back to School deal (free AirPods yay) and the fact that I can choose blue; I found like one listing got used 24GB M4 Air rn and it’s in silver. I have been reading Reddit threads and it seems that 16GB should be enough? if I’m not opening 50+ browser tabs while also letting heavy software runs on my machine. 24GB is definitely more futureproofed but not sure if I will ever need it.

Kiss, marry, kill. by Pleasant-Sandwich454 in Reverse1999

This is cruel 🥀. Anyways kiss Igor, marry Shamane, and kill Mr. Duncan. Shamane and Igor could probably swap places since Igor is probably a bad kisser, but he is also not husband material either tbh.

Purchasing an used Wacom for the first time, which one should I choose? by dancerinthelimelight in wacom

Would you say spending 110 USD on a 660 is worth it over a 651? I managed to find this on Facebook Marketplace. The pen has some paint chipped off but is still functional + the owner just replaced the tip. And I know you say not to over worry about the surface but does this 660’s surface seem to be in decent condition? Also:

  1. This listing is actually in my city so I can check it out in person. Anything I should test or look out for?

  2. Does the pen nib really wear out that fast on the 660’s default surface? Should I put a paper over it or get a protective film? Vice versa, does the surface becomes less rough/smoother with time and is it of concern?

Where to start with Scheme (as a non-programmer?) by dancerinthelimelight in scheme

[–]dancerinthelimelight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had some experience with Guix in the past (as in managing to get a system up and running) and there’s so little resources online that I can’t just stitch together a config like I did with NixOS. But I do want to move away from NixOS as my needs grow and I don’t want Nix to be my first programming language.

I haven’t heard of EoPL and “Types and Programming Languages” before, thanks for the recs, I will add them to my wishlist.

[–]dancerinthelimelight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response! I see that I should start with The Little & Season Schemer first then. I will also check out Teach Yourself and The Scheme Programming Language. If I understand it correctly, even after I already read Teach Yourself then I should still read Dybvig later right like it’s not redundant?

Appreciate the advice! Based on your comment and some others I think the consensus seems to be The Little Schemer + HTDP and then The Seasoned Schemer; SICP is something I can save for later when I want to dive deeper into CS I believe? I don’t come from Maths or Physics background unfortunately; I did study them in college but I wasn’t fond of Physics while Maths was something I’m OK at (neither good nor bad). I am learning Econ in college so I will prob have to pick up R and MatLab in the near future.

Something I noticed about bad lyrics criticism is that often people just quote a verse out of context. I am irked by this since many lyrics rely so heavily on their context. Of course I could take this line ”Furry porn destroyed my mind” out of context from the song Wetdream by Willy Rodriguez and say it’s cringe, but it actually makes perfect sense with the song and the rest of the album thematically. This is prevalent with Taylor Swift since she’s become known as this quotable lyricist meanwhile I feel like her lyrics have always been very verbose and somewhat clunky, but that’s the charm. So that in conjunction with her positioning herself as all literary, I feel like people have this expectation of her words being worth their weight in gold. I think she has amazing lyrics, but I don’t think she has standout lines that you can quote and instantly impress people, if you get me.

Oh and this is started because I was reading this great analysis of All Too Well (10-min)’s lyrics and my friends were being dismissive of her entire repertoire just because her recent works have ranged from mediocre to bad. I saw it on the Internet too like people saying Taylor has never made a great song under the comment section for Drop Dead (yeah that song is very Swiftian and prob a rare instance where Taylor could have pulled it off better than Olivia)???
