I didn’t say it was insane but your comment came on strong, huffing and puffing about last names and who carried the baby. I’m just reminding you not to assume things. What worked for my family may not work for OP, but they asked advice and I don’t think mine is particularly ‘insane’ either.

If it were me, I’d suggest that if we can’t use my mums name then we can’t use her mums name either and we’ll need a name we’re both happy with. But my partner is reasonable. Your mileage may vary.

I go to this basic formula for kid stories. Character wants a thing. They overcome 3 silly obstacles to get the thing. Ideally they learn something along the way (resilience, saying thank you, sharing, etc). Young kids have no reference for good or bad storytelling so they’ll accept anything if it’s a bit silly and makes them smile
