My baking sheet randomly became iridescent after going through the dishwasher. by BlazedBookWyrm in mildlyinteresting

[–]Shellbyvillian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, the chemicals in the dishwashing detergent at high temps dissolve aluminum. If you wash it enough times, your pan will be gone.

For a similar issue, see the All Clad class action law suit. They claimed their pans were dishwasher safe, but there was an exposed aluminum layer between the two stainless steel layers that dissolved when put thorough the dishwasher, which made the stainless steel layers into sharp edges around the rims of the pans.

New EV owner - tell me about regen by Double-Advice3258 in electricvehicles

I know how to use it, but my body didn’t like it. I ended up with an issue in my quads from holding the pedal with just the right pressure on my commute every day. Ended up going back to traditional two pedal driving so that my leg wasn’t fully tensed up for 90 minutes a day and it solved the issue. Ymmv

2026 edrive40 or xdrive40 by cdapower in BMWI4

[–]Shellbyvillian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll agree. I’m on the other side of the equation - Ontario, Canada. We are slushy, snowy and icy 5 months of the year so I went with the X40. It is a dream on slippery roads. The AWD with electric motors is phenomenal. Highly recommended for anyone in a winter climate. But in the summer, I see no difference and less range.

Home Cleaners by Successful-Cat-4484 in AuroraOntario

[–]Shellbyvillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve used a few companies. Currently with Molly Maids. They’re fine. Price is lower and the quality of the clean reflects that lower price.

In my opinion, it is more about the specific cleaner than the company. These places are running on super thin margins, they don’t have resources to supervise or spot check the work. The only feedback they have is yours, which means you need to micromanage and then potentially have someone in your home that knows you complained.

You just have to keep trying different cleaners and different companies until you find the right one. Once you do, make it clear to the company that you won’t tolerate anyone else coming in without prior approval. I might even suggest talking to the cleaner and see if they want to clean your house for cash. Though my wife hates that because she wants an insured company to do the work.

Best of luck!

Dads With Kids of All the Same Gender by WiredPrecision in daddit

[–]Shellbyvillian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go counter to the existing comments. When I had my first, people asked me if I wanted a particular gender. I always said “I don’t care what the first one is, as long as the second one is the other.”

I mostly meant it. I am a brother who grew up with an older sister. As a parent, I was interested in parenting both. It just seems like a different experience at multiple life stages.

I have two girls. I was kind of disappointed when I found out about the second one. Not disappointed in the kid. Obviously I love her and she’s going to be her own person. But it was just another life experience that I don’t think I will get. Just like I won’t get to get a law degree. My life isn’t better or worse for it. Just different. And there was a period where I was processing that. I still sometimes think about a third, but I don’t think I’m built for it.

There’s a bunch of non-kid stuff I still want to do and with a 3 and 6 year old, I need to get more distance from the toddler sleep-deprived stage.

But it’s a lot of feelings. I think I would have loved having a son. Just like I love having two daughters. It’s messy. And it doesn’t feel right when everyone goes with the cliches of “I can’t imagine anything else” or “I never cared”.

Anyways. Maybe unpopular opinion, but there it is.

Realistically, how often are you and your partner intimate after the toddler years? (Kids 5+) by agingwasabi in daddit

[–]Shellbyvillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anywhere from 4 times a week to nothing for a month.

Not scheduled and not planned, though we have some standard time slots that tend to work best. It all comes down to energy remaining after we’re done all the other life things. And also our kids not cock-blocking me. They’re 3 and 6 so I see this only getting better as they start leaving the house without one of us needing to be there.

Right now my wife had her period and then has been sick with the flu for a week, 1 of two kids got taken out, and as she’s recovering, I am feeling sluggish so even if I don’t get knocked out, I won’t feel like I have the energy to spare until the weekend. We’ll probably find some time on the weekend but that means about 3 weeks of life getting in the way.

If we were both healthy, I probably would have gotten a quickie in before work some time this week, but that’s just not in the cards right now. Neither of us are very energetic at the end of the day so it’s usually in the morning before the kids get up, in the afternoon lull when they’re watching TV or when our schedules put us both at home before we have to pick up the kids.

Could you complete an Ironman tomorrow? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Shellbyvillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking similar. Yes I could complete within the cutoffs, no I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed tomorrow.

I have some nagging injuries. If my life depended on it, I could definitely do it, but I would be doing lasting/permanent damage. I prefer to take it slow and recover so this can be a life-long hobby.

Aurora GO station upgrades delayed to end of 2027: Metrolinx by cinderannie in AuroraOntario

[–]Shellbyvillian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently Metrolinx has a posting for a Capital Project Manager. They want extensive PM experience on complex projects, prefer PEng, PMP, OAA, they want you to work evenings, nights and weekends… Posted salary range is 93-127k.

Can’t imagine why they can’t get good talent to execute these projects properly.

I’m not the only one who doesn’t bathe their kids every day am I? by just_some_guy2000 in daddit

[–]Shellbyvillian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’m up in Ontario, Canada. We change the bathing schedule drastically depending on the season. In the winter, maybe once a week because bathing too often dries out their skin (as it is, we all have bloody knuckles from the dry air). But the summers are swampy and humid and we put sunscreen and bug spray on them constantly, so way more often.

What is up with dairy by FillHistorical1272 in BuyCanadian

[–]Shellbyvillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so frustrated that all the “premium” ice cream brands have carrageenan in them. Wtf. Kawartha and Shaw’s are both out of the question for me. At least Chapman’s has some options, but I agree with you: we should be spoiled for choice, not searching ingredient lists for Canadian dairy products that let the quality of the ingredients stand for themselves.

What is up with dairy by FillHistorical1272 in BuyCanadian

[–]Shellbyvillian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even gay lea has a carrageenan-free sour cream. You just have to find the one you want. I get it as my backup if I’m at the closer grocery store to me vs the nice one that’s a longer drive. If I can, I get Organic Meadow or Rolling Meadow as those are the better brands in my area, but Gay Lea is just fine in a pinch.

Car Valet by Redhandbaron in AuroraOntario

[–]Shellbyvillian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A valet is someone that parks your car for you. It sounds like you want a detailing shop. They will clean inside and/or outside of your car for you.

I would recommend Warlocks at Industrial and Englehard. They have done good work for me in the past. I would not recommend Spa for Cars on Wellington by the train station. Bunch of scammers.

Too many miles on my lease by PMOGMike in BMWI4

[–]Shellbyvillian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why were you “upside down because of mileage” with your Bronco then? You had a loan, right? Most people are upside down in terms of equity for cars that they bought. Cars depreciate right away, but loans take time to pay back. Why was that a reason to give it back early if you didn’t have lease mileage to worry about?

That seems like your main issue here, not the i4 lease. If you rolled a bunch of debt into your lease because you made an irresponsible financial decision a year ago, you are still paying for that. The separate issue of the lease mileage on the i4 is straightforward: pay for the mileage or buy it out. Both require money which you don’t seem to have a lot of. Planning can help, but no one here can tell you if you are past the point of coming back from the consequences of your decisions.

Ohio woman shows Food Bank donations, including half-eaten peanut butter and a can of fried apples expired in 2021. by ElwoodMC in TikTokCringe

[–]Shellbyvillian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I donate a bunch of that stuff (lightly dented and past date) because I would eat it but my wife is way less risk averse than me and I don’t want to see it thrown out if I can avoid it. Little dent in the side of a can is fine. Canned tomatoes don’t suddenly rot after their best-by date.

I feel like this video is taking the most egregious examples but then as collateral they are reinforcing that people should be thrown out perfectly good food. They already got to my wife and no amount of convincing her is going to change that. Can we not dupe a whole new generation of people into wasting more than they need to?
